Who is Dan Severn?
Not many wrestlers were born on June 8, 1958, but for one born in Coldwater, in mid-Michigan, who grew up on a farm, Severn turned out to represent his birthday mates well in the fighting sports.
Growing up like most other kids then and even now, Dan Severn took to playing basketball and was very good at it, coming down to his teens, the lad switched to combat sports, particularly amateur wrestling and Jujutsu (a Japanese martial art which involves close combat of defeating an armed and armored opponent with or without a short weapon). During his time in school at Hill McCloy HS in Montrose, Michigan, one of his coaches approached him to file in for amateur wrestling after they had a dearth of competitors from their school. This marked his first contact with the sports as he grabbed the opportunity and began training in amateur wrestling.
In his high school wrestling days, Dan showed early signs of how good a fighter he was. He emerged a three-time All American at Arizona State University in Wrestling. After school, Dan Severn began his wrestling career as a Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestler. He fought in various wrestling promotions between 1982 and 1994 in countries like France, Japan, Turkey, Cuba, and Hungary, capturing various titles as he fought his way to stardom.
The Michigan fighter began his professional fighting career as a wrestler in 1992 for UWF-I (Universal Wrestling Federation International). As at 2017, he fought in the Gladiator Championship Wrestling and Price of Glory Wrestling.
In the MMA, he made his debut in UFC 4 in the year 1994 and beat down his opponents on his way to the top of the sports before he retired in 2013. Dan made a comeback with hopes of fighting a URFight promotion but his opponents; Ken Shamrock and Tank Abbott, at various times, failed to present themselves as fit for the bout. He still hopes for a future URFight event. Dan Severn is yet to officially retire from wrestling.
