Despite only having a nine-year NFL career which featured lesser games per season than there is today, Jim Brown still has numeorus NFL records to his name, making him arguably the greatest American football player ever. The 1964 NFL Championship winner, who garnered Pro Bowl selections in every season he played and was named MVP on three occassions, played his whole career for the Cleveland Browns.
Who Is Jim Brown? – Biography
Jim Brown was born James Nathaniel Brown to Swinton and Theresa Brown on the 17th of February, 1936 in St. Simons Island, Georgia. His father Swinton was a professional Boxer while his mother Theresa was a homemaker although she later moved to New York to work as a domestic worker, leaving her child to be raised by his grandmother.
Brown eventually moved to New York to stay with his mother and attended Manhasset Secondary School where his father’s athletic genes were put on full display as he starred in Manhasset’s football, lacrosse, baseball, basketball, and track team. After graduating from high school with 13 sports letters, Brown accepted a scholarship to attend Syracuse University in 1953.
At Syracuse, Jim Brown continued to play multiple sports instead of focusing on one. In football, he set the school’s records for the most rushing touchdowns in a single game, 6, and also the highest season rush average at 6.2. He then earned consensus first-team All-American honors and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting in his senior year. As a part of the lacrosse team, he earned second-team All-American honors in his junior year and first-team All-American honors in his senior year. In basketball, Brown was the second-leading scorer on his team in his sophomore year as he also earned a letter that year for his participation on the track team.
After four years at Syracuse, Jim Brown was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the sixth overall pick in the 1957 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, Brown set an NFL single-game record for rushes in a game when he recorded 237 yards against the Los Angeles Rams. That record stood for 14 years before it was broken, and a total of 40 years before it was managed by another rookie. He went on to end his rookie season as a runner-up for the NFL Championship as he was also named the NFL Rookie of the Year.
After that season, Brown continued breaking and setting numerous NFL and franchise records but it, however, took him another seven years before he was able to play in an NFL championship game again. In 1964, at the second time of asking, Jim Brown won his only NFL Championship. The following year, he returned to the championship game but only managed a runner-up position. He retired from the NFL after that game to pursue a career first as an actor and then as a sports analyst.
Jim Brown’s Family – Wife, Children
Jim Brown is currently on his second marriage. His first marriage was to Sue Brown (nee Jones) in 1959. Not much is known about how the couple met but their marriage was marred by numerous extra-marital affairs and domestic violence by Brown who was at the top of his game at the time. Some of the most notable affairs were his relationships with an 18-year-old girl named Brenda Ayres in 1965 and model Eva Bohn-Chin in 1968. Sue and Jim finalized their divorce proceedings in 1972.
Brown stepped back into the dating pool and stayed there for close to three decades before choosing to settle down again at the age of 60 with Monique Brown (nee Gunthrop), who was herself in her early 20’s. The pair got married in 1997 and have been together ever since despite more allegations of cheating and violence by Brown. Two years after exchanging vows, Brown served a six-month jail term after he refused to attend a court-ordered counseling session and community service over accusations made by Monique that he had given her a black eye and threatened to break her neck while also smashing her car with a shovel because she had confronted him for cheating.
Jim Brown is reported to have about seven children, although some reports say the true figure could be more than that. Brown had three children from his first marriage; twins Kim and Kevin, and then James Jr. With his current wife, he has had two; Aris and Morgan. The other kids came from other relationships although he has denied paternity to some of the children. They are Kimberly from his relationship with Kim Jones, Shellee from his relationship with Brenda Ayres, and Karen Brown Ward, whose mother’s name was withheld.
Not much is known about most of his other kids, but Brown’s youngest son, Aris looks to have inherited his father’s athletic ability. He is reported to be a very talented Lacrosse player, a game in which his father is also a Hall of Famer.
