Talk of someone rising from zero to hero and we would have quarterback Josh Allen who was never a star player back in college but fate smiled on him as he was picked 7th on NFL 2018 draft and is currently signed with the Buffalo Bills. Let’s take a glimpse at his profile, the real facts behind his football career, his new contract deal and body stats.
Who is Josh Allen?
Born May 21, 1996, the quarter back came from a family who emigrated from Sweden around 1907 during the Great Depression to settle in California. His childhood days were spent in a farm of about 3,000 acres near Firebaugh, California where he attended Firebaugh High School, graduating in 2014.
Josh Allen’s Bleak Days: The Real Facts About His Career
Allen grew up loving football and was a Fresno State fan; he attended both their games and football camps. His father, in the bid to get Allen on track as a sportsman, tried to negotiate for him to get a sports scholarship via the Bulldog’s program coach Tim DeRuyter but to no avail. This continued for a long while as young Allen never got lucky to get a scholarship offer.
In a 2017 story of Allen by ESPN journalist Mark Schlabach, the issue of the football player’s bleak days of no scholarship offers in high school was further discussed and it was said that it could have been because Allen had not yet met the physical requirements and capabilities for being a quarterback. His team had not gone for any quarterback camp as at then as they were still involved in diverse sports and had not settled to develop themselves as pros of a particular sport. Furthermore, Allen’s family did not position him well to be up for grabs as they kept him in the small town of Firebaugh instead of transferring him to a school that will expose him to being noticed for scholarships like most families did with their athletic children.
Allen later got enrolled in Reedley College where he was under the tutelage of his cousin’s husband but irrespective of that, the scholarship offer was still not forthcoming. According to Ernie Rodriguez, the offensive coordinator at Reedley, Allen, at the time, was actually a terrific player with very good throws but he never understood why he had not been noticed. Towards the end of the season and with no sign of any scholarship, Allen took the initiative to sent a mass mail to various coaches, offensive and defensive coordinators in addition to every quarterback coach in FBS which landed him two offers – one from Eastern Michigan and the other from Wyoming, although Eastern Michigan cancelled its offer and he was left with only Wyoming.
Josh Allen started his first year at Wyoming by playing in two games and making one start. He tried to play it safe in the beginning by taking up only four passes but along the line, he sustained a broken collarbone injury which made him qualify only for a medical redshirt. He returned in 2016 after his recovery and became Wyoming’s starter.
He made about 3,200 yards throws and 28 touchdowns in 2016 which propelled him to declare for the 2017 NFL draft. Allen first informed his family, girlfriend and a few close friends about his intentions but there was a setback when his father received a call from his college to dissuade Allen from turning pro in 2017. The school wanted him to stay in school one more year to develop himself better. Allen was not initially pleased with the new idea of waiting one more year but after seeking advice from his head coach Bohl who told him that turning pro means having lots of people depending on his success to even help keep their jobs and that it would be very tasking, Allen opted to remain at Wyoming in 2017 and eventually got better at his game. He was able to land a spot on the NFL 2018 draft list; signed by Buffalo Bills in July.
