Sports journalism isn’t a field that is awash with females as it has historically been a male-dominated niche, however, Kate Abdo has steadily risen to become one of the most recognizable faces in the field not only in the United States and the United Kingdom but also all over the world. To her credit, Kate has worked with global brands in terms of sports media across these two continents. She first worked with Sky Sports News in the United Kingdom before moving on to Fox Sports in 2017 as a studio host for soccer-related sports programs. She has also had successful stints with CNN and has hosted some of the most prestigious events in world football.
Kate Abdo’s Beginnings and Career Rise
Kate Abdo was born on the 8th day of September 1981, as Kate Giles in Manchester, England and received her earliest formal education as a student of a day school in her city of birth – Withington Girls’ School. When she was done with the Withington Girls’, she furthered her education, studying at different higher institutions both in the United Kingdom and even in Spain. Kate’s grandmother is from Guyana and hence explains her affinity with the Spanish culture and language.
It is known that she graduated from the University of Salford. Kate Abdo is a first-class degree holder in European languages and has lived in Germany, France, and Spain. One of the competencies that have helped her career thus far is that she is fluent not only in English but equally in German, French, and Spanish.
Kate’s career in sports journalism took off in earnest in 2003 and 2004 when she had the opportunity to work for an initial six months in Munich and a further six months in Paris. Between September 2005 and September 2006, Kate was an intern with the Foreign Languages Editorial Department at Deutsche Welle (DW) where she worked as an English translator.
After her one year internship at Deutsche Welle (DW) she resumed as a production assistant for DFL (German Football League) in September 2007 where she worked with the production team of DFL’s global Bundesliga show – Goal! – taking charge of producing reports for a Spanish language version. She continued serving at DW as a sports anchor on the sides until June 2009.
Kate has gone on to work for some of the top media houses including CNN and Sky Sports. In 2009, she moved to CNN International and later on wrote and presented “World Sports” for the news network from studios in London and Atlanta. She equally reported for CNN en Espanol where she covered major sports events. Kate was with CNN until July 2011. Her next role was as a head presenter for Sky Sports News HD in Munich. In December 2015, Kate Abdo joined Fox Sports as a TV presenter and later as a host of one of their sports shows.
One of the highlights of sports journalism especially with regards to football is definitely been picked to host the Ballon D’Or and Kate has had the honor of hosting the Ballon D’Or in 2014 and 2015. Her multilingual skills came in handy as she was able to interview top athletes in their various first languages.

Very little is known about her parents and siblings. It was once muted that she has a brother and another family member who are fans of Manchester City and Liverpool football club.
Prior to her marriage, Kate Abdo was known as Kate Giles. She married a German businessman and Real Estate investor, Ramtin Abdo in 2010, hence the change in her surname. Ramtin, who is fluent in Persian, German and English, is the Chief Executive of INA Ventures and but gained popularity after his marriage to Kate. Media shy and deliberately wary of the limelight, Ramtin operates no major social media account and rarely grants interviews as he prefers to remain behind the shadows. He also founded a company called SMAP. The couple is yet to have any children and haven’t adopted any just yet.
