Ryan Flaherty was born July 27, 1986, in Portland, Maine, U.S.A. He is one of three children born to Edward Flaherty and Deborah Flaherty. Ryan was raised in Maine along with his other siblings Regan and Regina. He attended Deering high school and graduated from high school in 2005. His father is a baseball lover, no wonder Ryan inherited his passion for the game. His dad is the current coach of University of Southern Maine baseball team and he played for the university’s team when he was much younger and as a child, Ryan would accompany his father to Southern Maine practices, and field grounders. Edward was a star during his time at University of Maine baseball team. He has been with the university’s baseball team for a couple of decades now and even has the University of Southern Maine baseball pitch named after him. While Edward was still an active baseball player at the University of Southern Maine, Ryan frequently followed his dad to the team’s practice and his love for the game grew even bigger.
Ryan Flaherty played amateur baseball for his high school team, Deering high. He got the nickname Maine’s Mr. Baseball while playing for Deering high. Following his graduation from Deering high school in 2005, he got into Vanderbilt University in Nashville where he further continued his amateur baseball career. He played in the southern conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division 1 for the Commodores.
In his first year in college, Ryan made 62 game appearances for the Commodores, he had an average batting of .339 with 49 RBI, 19 doubles, 2 homers and .421 on-base percentage, guiding his team with 22 multi-hit and 15 multi-RBI games.
In his second year in college, Ryan’s statistics could only get better, topping his previous batting average and taking it to an impressive average of .381 with 57 RBI, 23 doubles, 4 homers and a .438 on-base percentage, all in 67 game appearances. His ever-improving performance got him listed in second-team All-American selection by both American baseball coaches association and Rivals.com. He got in the second-team All-SEC selection in Division 1 baseball, amongst other achievements.
