Yuvraj Singh is an Indian-born international cricket player. As a left-handed all-rounder, Singh has enjoyed an illustrious international career since joining the Indian national team in 2000. He was highly instrumental in India’s victory at the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. He made history at the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup becoming the first cricketer to take a 5-wicket haul and score a 50 in a single World Cup game and was later named Man of the Tournament.
Owing to his outstanding achievements in the game of cricket, Yuvraj Singh was conferred with the 2012 Arjuna Award, one of the top sports honors by the Indian government. Singh is also a recipient of the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India.

Yuvraj Singh was born on December 12, 1981, in Chandigarh, India to Shabnam and Yograj Singh. He had his early education at the DAV Public School in Chandigarh. His father Yograj Singh is a former Indian cricketer who delved into acting upon retirement from cricket. However, Yuvraj’s parents split when he was just a teenager. He was raised alongside his younger brother Zoravar Singh by his mother.
Yuvraj Singh’s interest in sports was birthed at a very young age as he excelled in tennis and roller skating. However, his father Yograj Singh being a former cricketer favored cricket above all other sports. When the young Yuvraj clinched the National Under-14 Roller Skating Championship, his father disposed of his son’s medal and urged him to concentrate fully on cricket.
At barely 14 years of age, Yuvraj Singh joined the Punjab under-16s cricket team. His youth career climaxed at the 2000 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup where Singh was named as the man of the tournament and also earned himself a call-up to the Indian national cricket team. Singh was equally admitted into India’s National Cricket Academy located in Bangalore. The youngster marked his One Day International (ODI) debut against Kenya at the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy tournament. Singh was rather inconsistent during the first few years of his senior career, however, he managed to attain some level of success.
In September 2007, Yuvraj Singh was named as the vice-captain of the Indian squad, a position he held till 2008. At the 2011 World Cup, Singh put up an impressive performance which is undoubtedly the highlight of his senior career. He scored 362 runs and also took 15 wickets becoming the first player to score over 300 runs and take 15 wickets in the one ICC World Cup. This sublime form had Yuvraj Singh named Man-of-the-Match in four games and was ultimately crowned as the Player of the Tournament.
After his highly successful outing at the 2011 ICC World Cup, Yuvraj Singh was diagnosed with stage-1 lung cancer in May 2011. However, the tumor has since gone into remission following a successful chemotherapy treatment in the United States. He swiftly returned to cricket in 2012 and after playing an additional 5 years for his country, Yuvraj Singh ended his international career in August 2017.
