1. Who is Sarah Mclachlan?

Sarah was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on the 28th of January 1968. The identity of her biological parents is not known but she was placed under the care of the McLachlan family who legally adopted her. Though her adoptive parents’ identity is not equally known, her adoptive father has been identified as a marine biologist. She started experimenting with music from the tender age of four starting with the Ukulele. Sarah joined the Maritime Conservatory of Music to study classical piano, classical guitar as well as train her voice. Her training was accomplished via the curriculum of The Royal Conservatory of Music.

At 17, while she was still studying at Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax, Sarah founded a transitory rock band known as The October Game. She bagged a recording contract with Nettwerk, a Vancouver-based independent record label. This was after the debut concert of The October Game rock band at Dalhousie University opening for Moev. However, her adoptive parents wanted her to complete her high school education and still put in a year at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Sarah was able to sign-on with Nettwerk a couple of years later even without writing a single track. She got to meet her biological mum at age 19 after she was introduced by a mutual friend, but she did not show any interest in building a bond with her.

McLachlan recorded her first album titled Touch in 1987 and it was a huge commercial success. Following the release of the album, she embarked on a tour where she was an opening act for The Grapes of Wrath, a Candian rock band. In 1991 she released her breakthrough album Solace which made her a household name in the country. With hit singles like The Path of Thorns (Terms) and Into the Fire, Solace was indeed a massive success which broke boundaries and topped various charts in Canada and beyond.

Sarah’s third studio album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy followed in 1993 and like others, remained on top. Her fourth album, Surfacing was released in 1997 and turned out to be her best-selling album ever. Sarah was also remarkable for the mind-blowing song Angel a song she did about the dreadful heroine overdose that claimed the life of keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin. The song became an inspiration to many including Darryl McDaniels who admitted to changing his pattern of life after he was touched by it.

She released her fifth studio album Afterglow in 2003, a Christmas album Wintersong followed in 2006. The singer released her eighth studio album Shine On in January 2014 and her 9th Wonderland In 2016.

On the 7th of February 1997, she tied the nuptial knot in Jamaica with  her drummer while she was expecting their first baby. Her daughter India Ann Sushil Sood came into existence on the 6th of April 2002 in Vancouver. Another daughter named Taja Summer Sood followed on the 22nd of June 2007. An announcement of Sarah’s separation from Sood came in September 2008 and their divorce was finalized the same year.

4. Controversy

In 1994, Uwe Vandrei filled a lawsuit against Sarah with the allegations that the letters he wrote to her formed the basis for her single titled “Possession”. The plaintiff was a confirmed stalker whose acknowledged aim for filing the lawsuit was just to be close to the singer. As a result of this development, Sarah had to beef-up security any time she was in the same location with Uwe. However, the lawsuit never saw the light of the day because Uwe was found dead in an ostensible suicide.
