In the British royal family, the third child and second son of and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh is Prince Andrew The Duke of York. Prince Andrew The Duke of York was born on the 19th of February 1960 in the Belgian Suite of Buckingham Palace. He was baptized on the 8th of April 1960 by Geoffrey Fisher, the then Archbishop of Canterbury. To date, Prince Andrew is the only child born to a reigning monarch only after Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria’s youngest child born in the year 1857.

In line with the family tradition and as was done for his two elder siblings, Prince Andrew was looked after by a governess who was responsible for his early education in Buckingham Palace. When he got older, he was sent to Heatherdown School situated near Ascot in Berkshire where he studied for a while before moving over to Gordonstoun, in northern Scotland. He then went on an exchange program to Lakefield College School in Canada. Following his return from Canada, the prince graduated in 1979 after which he enrolled at the Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth.

After completing and passing several military tests at Britannia Royal Naval College, Prince Andrew The Duke of York enrolled at the Royal Air Force at RAF Leeming for elementary flight training. He thereafter had his basic flight training with HMS Seahawk and it was here that he learned how to fly the Gazelle helicopter, Sea King helicopter and also served with the 820 Naval Air Squadron aboard the HMS Invincible which is an aircraft carrier.

1. Military Career (His Involvement in the Falklands War)

In the course of his military career which lasted from 1978–2001, the Falklands war for the Falkland Islands broke out between Britain and Argentina in the year 1982. HMS Invincible which Prince Andrew was serving aboard was operational at the time and thus got deployed for the war with its troop.

However, for fear of having the Queen’s son killed in combat or stealthily by the Argentines, the British Government and its Cabinet decided and instructed that Prince Andrew remain on the ship and take charge of a desk job while the war lasted. He thus served as the co-pilot of Sea King helicopter and was involved in less dangerous missions like anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, search and air rescue, Exocet missile decoy, transport, and casualty evacuation.

2. Charity Courses

Just like other members of his family, Prince Andrew The Duke of York is involved with several charity organizations. Since 1999, he has been the chairman of Outward Bound Trust, a charity organization that works to instill leadership qualities in young people. In the same vein, he is also involved with Fight for Sight and Women’s Interlink Foundation (WIF). Fight for Sight is a UK funded charity organization that does research and finds solutions to blindness and eye disease while WIF empowers women with skills that can earn them income.
