The Premise of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out
In Knives Out, Harlan Thrombey (portrayed by ) is a renowned and wealthy novelist. The Octogenarian is the author of many crime novels and has also won a lot of awards for his works. To celebrate his 85th birthday he invites his extended family to his mansion, many miles away from town with the aim of resolving conflicts that have left his family divided. But then the unexpected happens – he is found dead the next day after the celebrations.
His death comes as a shock to many and the police are soon alerted. Police Detective Benoit Blanc is asked to investigate the case. However as the story develops, all the family members become suspects in the all complicating case.

1. The Agatha Christie Effect
Its no news to fans of the filmmaker that Johnson had always wanted to make an Agatha Christie inspired murder mystery movie. He wanted to have the likes of ‘Hercule Poirot’ for once in his films and had sought a perfect timing for that. Rian had wanted to produce a film with such a theme after he finished Looper in 2012. But then, Star Wars: The Last Jedi followed in 2017. It was after then that Johnson decided it was time to make a movie with a theme like that of Agatha Christie’s murder mysteries.
