American journalist Fredricka Whitfield is a familiar face among Cable TV audiences around the world. She is best known for her anchoring role on the weekend edition of the popular news program CNN Newsroom. In the course of her career, she has worked from various locations across the globe, reporting major news stories which shook our world. She has equally served at CNN’s world headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Fredricka Whitfield was born on the 31st of May 1965 to Nola and Malvin Whitfield. While details about her early life and education are currently not in the purview of the public, we are in the know that she schooled at Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville, Maryland. After graduating from high school in 1983, she had her college education at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Howard University’s School of Communications in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Among other highlights of her college years, she worked as a news anchor for the campus radio station WHUR.
Whitfield worked for a couple of other TV networks before beginning her long-running stint on CNN in the early 2000s. Her first job after school was at WCIV, a television station in Charleston, South Carolina. There, she served as a news correspondent and the morning anchor. Her next job was as a general assignment reporter at WTNH, a news station in New Haven, Connecticut.
Fredricka Whitfield later served as a reporter and anchor for WPLG-TV, an ABC-affiliated television station in Miami, Florida. She moved to Washington afterwards where she worked as an evening anchor for another ABC-affiliated station NewsChannel 8, now WJLA-TV. She equally served as a general assignment correspondent at KTVT-TV, a CBS-owned station located in Dallas.
Whitfield’s longest stint before CNN was on NBC News, the news division of the NBC Network. Between 1995 and 2001, she served as an Atlanta-based reporter on NBC Nightly News, the flagship daily evening news program on NBC News. She also held other roles within this period, as a morning and afternoon anchor and an assignment correspondent. She equally featured on several other news shows including The Today Show and Dateline NBC.

Fredricka Whitfield has had quite an eventful career since she joined CNN in 2002. She is said to be the first news anchor to announce the death of former US president Ronald Reagan. She reported from the Persian Gulf region during the Iraq War and also reported the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami a.k.a. the Asian tsunami. This versatile newswoman equally reported from Beijing, China, during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and from Washington, D.C. – during the historic 2009 presidential inauguration of Barack Obama.
Husband, Children
Fredicka Whitfield’s family life is also as impressive as her professional life. She is in a long-running marital union with John Glenn, her college sweetheart-turned-husband. Glenn is a photojournalist, media consultant and event manager. He has served as editor/director of photography at several major newspapers, including The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) and USA Today.
He served as the photo manager for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico and also coached other photojournalists on the coverage of the 2008 Olympic games. He is the principal of J Glenn Photography, LLC. which was founded by him in June 2007.
Fredricka Whitfield has three children with her husband John Glenn. Their first child was born in January 2005, a son named John Glenn, Jr. In November 2012, the couple welcomed a set of fraternal twins, a daughter named Nola Amanda Glenn and a son named Gilbert James Glenn.
