Avril Lavigne Movies, Best to Worst Filmography and TV Shows

Over The Hedge (2006)

Arguably, the most successful movie in Avril Lavigne filmography, Over The Hedge is a 2006 animation. This animation is based on the comic strip by Michael Fry and T. Lewis. It is one of the works from the DreamWorks studio that didn’t fail to deliver. It was directed by Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick and was voiced by some of Hollywood’s finest such as the iconic actor , Garry Shandling, , , , and .

This fun and entertaining animation was centered on the activities of a selfish and self-serving raccoon RJ voiced by Bruce Willis. RJ mistakenly destroys the food of a bear named Verne and in an attempt not to be eaten pledged to replace the stash of food within a week. He later plots a plan to use other animals to steal human food and replace that which he destroyed in the guise of helping the hungry animals find food.

Critically and commercially, Over the Hedge was a triumph. It has been described as a fun-filled and entertaining movie which appeals to persons of all ages in the family. With a budget of $80 million, it was able to gross a box office sale of $360 million. For its audience approval, it has been rated high based on scores recorded on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. The audience on Rotten Tomatoes gave the animation a 71% rating and 6.7/10 on IMDb.

Sabrina, The Teenage Witch (1996 – 2003)

Sabrina, The Teenage Witch is a television series that is based on the comic book of the same name written by Dan DeCarlo and George Gladir. The movie was developed by Jonathan Schmock and directed by Linda Day, Jeff Melman, Leonard R. Garner Jr., Joyce Gittlin and David Grossman. It had as part of its cast some fine actors and actresses such as , , , Nate Richert, Jenna Leigh Green, Michelle Beaudoin, Paul Feig, , Alimi Ballard, Martin Mull, China Jesusita Shavers, David Lascher, Jon Huertas, Trevor Lissauer appearing alongside Avril Lavigne.

As does the comic book, the story revolves around a young lady who discovers she has magical powers. Prior to this discovery, she was oblivious of her family’s history which was deep in witchcraft – made up of witches and wizards. Upon her discovery, her mother and her aunt taught her how to control her gifts. The series which ran from 1996-2003 had every season throwing up a new chapter in Sabrina’s “powerfull” world. The show’s aggregate budget or box office sales are not disclosed, therefore it is difficult to ascertain its commercial success. Also, it was highly rated amidst other series of its time.

The series which was first aired on ABC network had a fair audience approval rate. The film had an average score of 6.6/10 on IMDb. Critically, the seasons were loved. It received many positive reviews on leading review sites such as Rotten Tomatoes and tv.com. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes awarded it with a 93% approval rating for season one only. The other seasons were also critically acclaimed.

Fast Food Nation (2006)

Fast Food Nation is a didactic story originally written and published in a novel by Eric Schlosser bearing the same name. The movie adaptation, however, was written and directed by Richard Linklater. The novel, Fast Food Nation, was written to examine the United States fast food industry. Appearing alongside Avril Lavinge, were Patricia Arquette, Luis Guzmán, Ethan Hawke, Ashley Johnson, Greg Kinnear, Kris Kristofferson, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Ana Claudia Talancón and Wilmer Valderrama.

Fast Food Nation is actually a loose adaptation of the novel so you would have to watch the movie to get Linklater’s version. The movie tells a story of a fast-food company known as Mickey which produces the hamburger called Big One. At a board meeting, the chief marketing director was informed that cow feces’ was found in the most ordered food on the menu – hamburger. The marketing director decides to visit the abattoir to examine the process the meat undergoes. He would later uncover several baffling truths in his investigation. Avril Lavigne plays a minor character role, appearing as Alice.

The movie was received with mixed feelings from critics and reviewers. While some praised it for being didactic, which was its major aim, others flawed the characters in the work as being too fleeting (just before you are trying to get to know a character, it disappears leaving you with unanswered questions and disconnections).

Rotten Tomatoes indicate that the movie has an audience approval rating of 42% based on 62,870 reviews. This is below average and disappointing, however, it bagged an average score of 6.3 stars out of 10 on IMDb. Whether or not the movie was a commercial success cannot be determined at this time as the budget of the movie is unknown and cannot be compared to its $2.2 million box office sales.

Charming (2018)

This animation which was released to the theatres in 2018 was not so much of a hit compared to other animations. A lot of critics blamed this on the low budget allotted to the film. It was written, directed by Ross Venokur and produced by John H. Williams. Voicing alongside Avril Lavigne is Sia, , , , and G.E.M.

The movie’s story features three favorite fairy tale characters, Snow White (voiced by Avril Lavigne), Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. All three fairy tale damsels are in a dilemma as they realize that they are all engaged to the same Prince Charming. The movie did very poorly at the box office grossing only $6.5 million against a budget of about $20 million. It also attracted many negative reviews and is poorly rated by the audience. On Rotten Tomatoes, its audience approval rating is at 41% and it scored 5.6/10 on IMDb.

The Flock (2007)

This American thriller film written by Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell is the worst of all the films the makes up Avril Lavigne filmography. Not much is known about these writers and their works, however, the director Andrew Lau is quite popular as he co-directed the famous trilogy: Infernal Affairs. Hence much was expected from this movie but it never delivered on the promise. Appearing alongside Avril Lavigne was the Golden Globe awards winning actor, and Claire Danes.

The story revolves around the effort of an overzealous detective to uncover sexual offenses committed in New Mexico. He is also frustrated about the sex offenders monitoring system and is about to retire but has one more job of training his replacement, Allison (Claire Danes). He is however prompted back to the field when a young girl is abducted. He believes the abduction was perpetrated by a sex offender he has been on to for years.

Critics expressed their dissatisfaction in the interpretation of the characters of the story; they, however, admit that it was a good story. The movie failed woefully commercially as it grossed only $7.2 million with a budget of $35 million. Audience approval of the movie was also not impressive. On Rotten Tomatoes, scores indicate that its audience approval rating was abysmally low at 31%. The case is the same on IMDb where the movie was rated 5.7/10.
