The veteran actor’s breakout role was as Victor Newman in the critically acclaimed soap opera, The Young and the Restless, which has been running since March 26, 1973. Eric Braeden was born on April 3, 1941, in a place called Bredenbek, in Germany. His birth name is Hans-Jörg Gudegast. The German-American actor was raised in Germany by his father, who died when he was only twelve years old. Prior to his death, Eric’s father served as a minor Nazi politician and a major in the military. But even at that, his family was unable to make ends meet. At that time, the actor’s only escape route from his family’s circumstances was through athletics and sports. Eric was very good in track and field events as well as handball and football. As an avid soccer fanatic, he featured for many local and semi-professional teams in his active years.
In 1959, He would migrate to the United States in search of a greener pasture. He first settled in New York City and later in Galveston, from where he moved to Texas, and then Montana. While he was in Montana and Texas, he did several odd jobs, including working as a cowhand, translator, and in a lumber mill. He also worked at the University of Texas’ medical school lab, after which he moved to Los Angeles, where he eventually enrolled at Santa Monica College. He also studied at Montana State University, Missoula, after earning a Track and Field Scholarship.
Eric Braeden holds the record as one of the founders of the German American Cultural Society (GACS). In 1991, he received the Federal Medal of Honor from the then German President, Richard von Weizsacker, whose “courage and moral leadership” he greatly admires.
