Eduardo Nunez is a professional baseball infielder from the Dominican Republic who currently plays for the Boston Red Sox. He began his professional career in 2004 with the New York Yankees as an international free agent but remained in their minor league until 2010 when he made his first MLB appearance.
Nunez is one of MLB’s greatest players; he is versatile and though he currently plays as an infielder, he can serve as a utility infielder, play the shortstop position, as well as play as an outfielder. The Dominican player also played for the Minnesota Twins, and the San Francisco Giants before he was traded to his current team in July 2017.

Eduardo Nunez was born in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic on the 15th of June 1987 as Eduardo Michelle Núñez Méndez. Not so much is known about his family, early life and upbringing but his mother’s name is given as Victoria Mendez.
At the age of seventeen, he signed with the New York Yankees as an international free agent. The franchise at a press conference introduced Eduardo Nunez to Derek Jeter, who was his childhood idol and told Jeter that the youngster (Nunez), will eventually be replacing him as the Yankees’ starting shortstop.
His professional debut was with the Staten Island Yankees of the Class A Short-Season New York–Pennsylvania League in 2005. Eduardo also represented the Yankees in the league’s All-Star Game that season, he was instrumental in the Yankees emerging as the league champions for the third time in a row and at the end of the season, he was ranked the 4th best prospect in the New York–Penn League.
During the 2006 season, Baseball America ranked him the 6th-best prospect in the Yankees franchise as well as the best prospect with the best throwing arm. Nunez started that season with the Tampa Yankees of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League, however, he struggled so much that season resulting in his being demoted to the Charleston RiverDogs of the Class A South Atlantic League (SAL), batting only .214 for both Tampa and Charleston.
He remained with the minor league until August 2010 when he was called up to the majors to replace Lance Berkman was on a 15-day disabled list at that time. He debuted for the team, the same day he was called up. In thirty games he played that season, he hit .280, with one home run, 7 RBIs, and twelves run. He became the replacement for Mark Teixeira during the 2010 American League Championship Series after he (Mark) suffered an injury. Baseball America ranked him 8th-best prospect in the Yankees franchise at the end of the season. He was also named the Best Defensive Infielder as well as the Best Infield Arm in the franchise at the end of that season.
Nunez started the 2011 season by replacing Ramiro Peña as the team’s utility infielder, with coach also using him as an outfielder that season when Nick Swisher suffered a tendinitis in his elbow. At the end of the season, he appeared in a total of 112 games for the Yankees.
The 2012 season was not one of Eduardo Nunez’s best seasons, he was demoted to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team after he hit .294 in his first twenty games of the season. In September of the same year, he was recalled from the Triple-A. He ended the regular season recording .292 batting average in eighty-two at-bats.
He was initially left out of the American League Championship Series that year but soon found his name on the list after Jeter suffered a fractured ankle. And although the Yankees lost the series to the Tigers, Eduardo still hit his 1st career postseason home run off of (Tigers pitcher) in the Game three of the ALCS.
His 2013 season was hampered by a series of injuries and he ended the season with .260 batting average and twenty-eight RBIs in ninety games played. In 2014, the Minnesota Twins acquired him in exchange Miguel Sulbaran – a minor league pitcher. The Twins moved him to their minor league affiliate Rochester Red Wings. He batted 7-for-22 (.318) for the Red Wings and on April 17th he was promoted to the Twins as the twenty-sixth man on their roster for a doubleheader. He ended the season with the Twins batting an average of .250 in seventy-two games.
Eduardo Nunez began the 2016 season with the Twins but ended it with the San Francisco Giants. with whom he began playing for after he was traded in July of the same year in exchange for Adalberto Mejía (a left-handed minor league pitcher). He played fifty games for the Giants that season with .269 batting average, thirteen stolen bases, four home runs, and twenty RBIs.
The following season, he played seventy-six with .308 average batting, eighteen stolen bases, four home runs, and thirty-one RBIs before he was traded to Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league pitchers Gregory Santos and Shaun Anderson.
In February 2018, he signed a one-year deal with the Boston Red Sox worth $4 million. The deal came with a player option worth $4 million for the next season (2019).
