There is something mysterious about most wrestlers, but with Rey Mysterio, the mystery is even deeper. He is a wrestler who is known for his masks and his high-flying wrestling style. Seen by many as the greatest cruiserweight wrestler of all time, Mysterio has made appearances in the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and the Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) although he is presently signed to the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
Biography and Age
While it is as Rey Mysterio Jr. that the wrestler is mostly known, he was actually named Óscar Gutiérrez at birth on December 11, 1974, in Chula Vista, California to the family of Roberto Gutierrez Sr. and Maria del Rosario. Nonetheless, the person who would have the greatest impact in his life is his uncle, Miguel Ángel López Díaz who was popular as Rey Misterio senior.
Rey Misterio Sr. whose name translates in Spanish to Mystery King was a professional wrestler and trainer who trained Rey Mysterio Jr when he was still just a child. Thanks to this, Mysterio made his debut in the ring at the age of 14 in Mexico. Before his uncle gave him the name Rey Misterio Jr, he was called La Lagartija Verde” (The Green Lizard) or “Colibrí” (Hummingbird).
In November 1994, he was introduced for the first time to the audience in the US at When World Collide as what would be the future of Mexican Wrestling. The next year, he got signed to Extreme Championship Wrestling and in 1996, he signed to the World Championship Wrestling. In that same year, he won his first Cruiserweight Championship after defeating Dean Malenko who had previously defeated him. Mysterio got to keep the title for only 3 months before Malenko defeated him to have it back.
Rey Mysterio and the WWE
In 2001, WCW closed down and Mysterio started fighting in Mexico independently before later returning to the United States where he would sign to the WWE in June 2002 where he started wearing his masks after he was unmasked in 1999. He won his debut match against Chavo Guerrero.
After 13 successful years with the WWE, it was announced in 2015 that Mysterio’s contract had expired. Through his years in the WWE, he has won a lot of championships including the 2 World Heavyweight Championship, 3 WWE Cruiserweight Championship, 2 WWE Intercontinental Championship, and a Royal Rumble.
In 2015, he went back to the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) which he was involved in between 1992 to 1995. He fought there for only a year, but kept fighting in the Independent circuit and Lucha Underground both from 2015 to 2018.
Through his years as a wrestler, Rey Mysterio has won many championships and awards such as 3 WWA Lightweight Championship, 5 WCW Cruiserweight Championship, and was named Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Rookie of the Year in 1992, Best Flying Wrestler 6 times, Best Wrestling Manoeuvre in 1995, and Most Outstanding Wrestler in 1996.
He has also been inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame in 2007 and Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame in 2010.
Where Is He Now?
Many years after he started wrestling, Rey Mysterio is still very much involved in wrestling. In January 2018, he got signed back to the WWE on a 2-year deal. More so, he is also signed to New Japan Pro-Wrestling and has also returned to AAA all in 2018.
Wife and Son
Inasmuch as Óscar Gutiérrez is a man who prefers to keep most of his life away from the public, it is known that he is married to Angie Gutierrez. The two tied the knot in 1996 and have been blessed with two children, a son Dominic who was born in 1997 and a daughter Aalyah who was born in 2001.
Rey Mysterio’s son, Dominic Gutierrez, is also a wrestler just like his father. Although he has played some college football, he has been training under veteran Pro Wrestler Jay Lethal in Florida. Most recently, he began training in Calgary, Alberta, Canada at Lance Storm’s Storm Wrestling Academy. It remains to be seen when he will finally make his debut in the ring.
Height and Weight
Rey Mysterio is a man who is much bigger than his size. He may not be the biggest you will get to see in any ring or even the tallest, but he may still be the most entertaining and skillful. He stands at a height of 5 feet 6 inches (168 cm) and has a weight of 175 lb (79 kg).
Even at that size, Mysterio has fought and defeated much larger wrestlers like Kane who stands at a massive height of 7 feet.
