He attended John Hay High School in Cleaveland Ohio and played on the school’s team. After high school, Oakley proceeded to Virginia Union University where he also excelled on the school’s basketball team.

A pioneer in the game, Oakley was at the first NBA draft of the lottery era in 1985. He was selected with the 9th overall pick in the first round, by the Cleveland Cavaliers at the 1985 NBA Draft but had his rights traded to the Chicago Bulls which was led at the time.

He was assigned the duty of protecting Jordan from opponents and also recorded awesome defensive and offensive records on the team.

In 1988, Oakley was traded by the Bulls to the New York Knicks and played alongside NBA star John Starks, Mark Jackson, and many others. Oakley was known as a defensive specialist at the Knicks and recorded 107 starts in a season.

He was again traded to the Toronto Raptors in 1998 and made impressive records at the team. Charles Oakley returned to the Chicago Bulls in 2001 after he was traded by the Raptors.
