A second-round draft pick out of Southern California, Nigerian-American basketball player Chimezie Metu has always maintained outstanding stats right from his balling days in high school where he was recognized as a four-star recruit. He continued with his athleticism and stellar performance streak in college where he was on the same team with Jordan McLaughlin, averaging 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in 27.0 minutes with a shooting percentage of 53 percent.

With college basketball behind him, Metu declared himself available to be picked up in the 2018 NBA Draft. Subsequently, the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA) secured his services in the second round of the draft. Chimezie Metu’s Biography

Although his birth occurred in Los Angeles (on March 22, 1997), he only stayed in the city till the age of six before his father, a Nigerian, took him to his home country where he stayed for another six years. While in Nigeria, soccer was the sport he invested his time on since the country is not so popular with basketball. Metu was back to the States in time for him to enroll at Lawndale High School in Lawndale, California. His high school presented the opportunity for him to make a headway in his basketball career and in the end, he was rated a four-star recruit. As such, offers started flying in from different schools including, Oregon, Arizona State, Harvard and a lot more. On May 12, 2014, Metu committed to the USC Trojans where he continued playing basketball for his varsity.

College Career

His college career was not devoid of remarkable feats. In addition to rubbing shoulders with ‘s record of most blocks by a USC freshman with 54 blocks, Chimezie Metu averaged 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, all in his freshman year when he equally played in 34 games, starting 2. He played for 10 minutes in his school’s loss to Providence in a game which was played in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Moving on to his sophomore year, the talented baller started in all 36 games and averaged 14.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He was also part of the team that played at the 2nd round of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The 2017 Pac-12 Most Improved Player, 2nd Team All-Pac-12 and All-Academic Honorable Mention were the titles he walked away with after the tournament.

In his junior year, he started 33 out of 34 games, averaging 15.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Early in 2018, Chimezie Metu, alongside teammate, Jordan McLaughlin, was named 1st Team All-Pac-12. He later boycotted the 2018 National Invitation Tournament so as to stay away from any form of injury and be in good shape for the big league. Metu then declared for the NBA draft of 2018.

Prior to his draft into the big league, Chimezie Metu had a brief run-in with the law after a federal document named him for allegedly taking $2,000 payment from a sports agency. The issue which came up on February 23, 2018, was resolved after USC stepped in to clear his name. He majored in Law, History and Culture at USC.

NBA Career

His NBA career took off after his draft on June 21, 2018. The San Antonio Spurs drafted him with the 49th pick during the NBA draft of 2018. After his selection was completed, the Spurs put him on their roster for the 2018 NBA Summer League. Having proved his worth, the San Antonio Spurs officially signed him on September 4, 2018. However, the terms of the deal between the two parties have remained a mystery.

The American-born power forward has all it takes to fit into the game of basketball where a good height and general physical fitness is of paramount importance. According to his 2018 NBA draft records, Chimezie Metu stands tall at a height of 6ft 8.5inches (2.08 m) and has a weight of 219.6 lb (99 kg) to go with his giant frame.

Again, his standing reach extends to as high as 9ft 0inches while his wingspan reaches 7ft 0.5inches. His hand length and width are listed as 9.00 and 9.25 respectively.
