Not many players on the PGA Tour have had the opportunity to represent the United States both as an amateur and as a professional like Webb Simpson has managed. He was a part of the victorious 2007 Walker Cup and Palmer Cup teams, as well as the victorious 2011 and 2013 Presidents Cup teams. Add those achievements to the ones he has managed on the PGA Tour and it becomes obvious why Simpson can already boast of having a successful golfing career.
Webb Simpson Bio
Webb Simpson whose full birth name is James Frederick Webb Simpson was born on the 8th of August, 1985 in Raleigh, North Carolina where he was raised. From a very young age, Simpson worked on becoming a professional golfer, spending most of his time at a number of local golf courses which eventually led to him earning an Arnold Palmer scholarship to attend Wake Forest University.
Before college, however, Simpson attended Needham B. Broughton High School where he played high school golf. As a part of the Wake Forest golf team, Simpson was three times named an All-American. In 2008, he was further named ACC Player of the Year after which he graduated and became a professional golfer.
Webb Simpson first played on the Nationwide Tour where he twice finished in second place as he completed the PGA Tour’s qualifying school to earn a spot in 2009. The following years after that were grueling for the player as he suffered very poor form and almost lost his playing privileges. However, by 2011, after going toe to toe with at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Simpson was able to bag his first victory at the Wyndham Championship which was being held in his home state. He followed that victory up with another one a few months later at the Deutsche Bank Championships.
In June 2012, Webb Simpson, who had performed consistently since his victories in the previous year, went on to win his first major championship – the U.S. Open – which propelled his ranking to a career-high fifth place. In 2014, Simpson had nine top-ten finishes which included a victory at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He went on to suffer another winless streak that lasted a few years until he won the 2018 Players Championship.
His Family, Wife, and Kids
Webb Simpson is happily married to Taylor Dowd Keith, his college sweetheart. The pair began dating each other at Wake Forest University although the story of how their parts first crossed is one for the ages. It is said that Webb’s father Sam, met and offered Taylor who was a sophomore $100 to go out on a date with his son who was a freshman. Nothing concrete materialized from that exchange initially. But a few months later, the pair seemingly became close friends and decided to embark on a relationship.
Simpson and Dowd dated all through college before calling time on their relationship after Dowd graduated. The couple decided to end things since Dowd was leaving Simpson in school to pursue an acting career in Los Angeles while he himself was already planning on becoming a professional golfer which had a demanding and hectic schedule.
The former lovers spent a full year apart without contact from each other before suddenly getting back together. They dated for just five months this time around before they got engaged and then exchanged vows in January 2010. Together, the couple has four children; Mercy, James, Willow, and Wyndham.
Siblings and Parents
Webb Simpson has had a strong support system all through his life, starting with his parents; Evander Samuel Simpson III and Debbie Webb Simpson, to his five siblings; four older and one younger.
The Simpson family suffered tragedy in November 2017 when their hilarious father, who proved to be a good matchmaker since he was initially responsible for setting his son up with his wife, passed away. He died at the age of 74 and the cause of his death was reported as Lewy body dementia (LBD).
Sam Simpson was also responsible for introducing his son to golf even though he never played the game any way close to a professional level. He maintained a job in real estate, serving as the co-CEO of a Raleigh, North Carolina real estate firm – Prudential York Simpson Underwood.
Height and Weight
Webb Simpson’s height is listed at 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) while he is reported to weigh about 175 pounds (79 kg).
