Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, is the husband of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II, who together, have enjoyed the longest marriage of any British sovereign as his wife, the queen, is also the longest-living and longest-reigning British monarch. In addition to the title of Duke, Queen Elizabeth II husband has held the titles of Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps, Colonel-in-Chief of the British Army Cadet Force, and Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Air Training Corps. He was further made Admiral of the Fleet, Captain General Royal Marines, Field Marshal, and Marshal of the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom.

The Duke of Edinburgh was born a prince on the 10th of June 1921, in Mon Repos, Corfu, Greece. He was named Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, the last child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.

While Philip was growing up, Greece was embroiled in the Greco-Turkish War of 1919 to 1922 in which his father served as a commander of an army division. By 1922, following the abdication and arrest of Philip’s uncle, the King of Greece, King Constantine I, and the arrest and subsequent banishing of Prince Andrew from Greece, the whole family left Greece for France, settling in Saint-Cloud, a suburb of Paris.

Philip received his early education in France, attending an American school in Paris named The Elms. At the young age of 7, he was sent to the United Kingdom to live with either his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, Dowager Marchioness of Milford Haven, or his uncle, George Mountbatten, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven, while he attends Cheam School. By 1933, he was enrolled at the German boarding school, Schule Schloss Salem where he spent two terms before transferring to the Gordonstoun School in Scotland.

In 1939, Philip graduated from Gordonstoun and joined the Royal Navy. He graduated from the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in 1940 as the best cadet in his course and was appointed as a midshipman. In under a year, after serving short postings on HMS Ramillies, HMS Kent, HMS Shropshire in the Indian Ocean, and HMS Valiant in the Mediterranean, and taking a number of courses in which he scored top in four of five of them, Philip was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant. By July 1942, Philip was promoted to lieutenant and went on to become the youngest first lieutenants in the Royal Navy after he was made second in command of HMS Wallace. After HMS Wallace, Philip moved to HMS Whelp which was at Tokyo Bay when Imperial Japan signed its surrender in 1945.

The following year, Prince Philip took up a new role as he returned to the United Kingdom. He became an instructor at HMS Royal Arthur, a shore Corsham, Wiltshire-based Petty Officers’ School before going on to marry Princess Elizabeth. After his marriage and subsequent honeymoon, Queen Elizabeth II Husband – Philip returned to the navy. He first held a desk job at the Admiralty before holding a staff course at the Naval Staff College, Greenwich. In 1949, he was stationed in Malta as the First Lieutenant of HMS Chequers, a destroyer and lead ship of the royal navy’s Mediterranean fleet. The following year, Prince Philip was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and then to Commander in 1952.

Queen Elizabeth II had already met her future husband a number of times before meeting him again in 1939 when she and her family; sister Margaret and parents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth toured the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth where Philip was studying at the time, that sparked their romance.

Elizabeth was said to have fallen in love with Philip who was charged with escorting her and her sister during the visit. The then 13-year-old girl began exchanging letters with Philip almost soon after that meeting, kicking off a romance that led to them getting married exchanging vows on the 20th of November 1947. Before that, however, Philip was made to renounce his Greek and Danish royal titles, and adopt the surname Mountbatten from his mother’s family while also officially converting from Greek Orthodoxy to Anglicanism. 

They welcomed their first child, Prince Charles, on the 14th of November 1948 and a second child, Princess Anne, on the 15th of August 1950. Ten years later, the couple welcomed their third child, Prince Andrew, on the 19th of February 1960 and then Prince Edward on the 10th of March 1964.
