Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, is the husband of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II, who together, have enjoyed the longest marriage of any British sovereign as his wife, the queen, is also the longest-living and longest-reigning British monarch. In addition to the title of Duke, Queen Elizabeth II husband has held the titles of Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps, Colonel-in-Chief of the British Army Cadet Force, and Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Air Training Corps. The Duke of Edinburgh was born a prince on the 10th of June 1921, in Mon Repos, Corfu, Greece. He was named Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, the last child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.

While Philip was growing up, Greece was embroiled in the Greco-Turkish War of 1919 to 1922 in which his father served as a commander of an army division. By 1922, following the abdication and arrest of Philip’s uncle, the King of Greece, King Constantine I, and the arrest and subsequent banishing of Prince Andrew from Greece, the whole family left Greece for France, settling in Saint-Cloud, a suburb of Paris.

Philip received his early education in France, attending an American school in Paris named The Elms. At the young age of 7, he was sent to the United Kingdom to live with either his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, Dowager Marchioness of Milford Haven, or his uncle, George Mountbatten, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven, while he attends Cheam School. By 1933, he was enrolled at the German boarding school, Schule Schloss Salem where he spent two terms before transferring to the Gordonstoun School in Scotland.

In 1939, Philip graduated from Gordonstoun and joined the Royal Navy. He graduated from the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in 1940 as the best cadet in his course and was appointed as a midshipman. In under a year, after serving short postings on HMS Ramillies, HMS Kent, HMS Shropshire in the Indian Ocean, and HMS Valiant in the Mediterranean, and taking a number of courses in which he scored top in four of five of them, Philip was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant. By July 1942, Philip was promoted to lieutenant and went on to become the youngest first lieutenants in the Royal Navy after he was made second in command of HMS Wallace. After HMS Wallace, Philip moved to HMS Whelp which was at Tokyo Bay when Imperial Japan signed its surrender in 1945.

The following year, Prince Philip took up a new role as he returned to the United Kingdom. He became an instructor at HMS Royal Arthur, a shore Corsham, Wiltshire-based Petty Officers’ School before going on to marry Princess Elizabeth. He first held a desk job at the Admiralty before holding a staff course at the Naval Staff College, Greenwich.
