Dallas Mavericks’ Dwight Powell is among the current crop of Canadian basketball players who have at least one immigrant parent that came to the country in search of greener pastures. The 6 feet 11 inches tall Stanford University graduate, along with others like Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett, have today been able to repay the country by contributing to its resurgence on the international basketball scene, almost setting the traditionally hockey-loving country toe to toe with its southern neighbor.

Early Life and Career

Dwight Harlan Powell was born to Jacqueline Weir and Harlan Powell on the 20th of July, 1991 in Toronto, Canada where he was equally raised. From a very young age, Powell was a stand-out athlete among his peers although his mother was more keen on him facing his education.

He attended Earl Haid Secondary School which is noted as one of the strongest academic public schools in the country but however lacked in the sports department. His mother understood that her son had a better chance attending an ivy league university on a sports scholarship so the family pushed for him to attend the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida who had previously offered him a scholarship and was noted as being an elite sporting school.

As a senior at IMG, Powell averaged 23.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game which earned him offers from Harvard, Stanford, and Georgia Tech. Despite his mother pushing for him to go to Harvard which was close to where they lived, Powell instead chose to attend Stanford all the way in California.

In his freshman year, after averaging 8.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in 31 games, Dwight Powell earned Pac-10 All-Freshman Team honors. He earned Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention selection in his sophomore year after averaging 5.8 points and 4.6 rebounds in 35 games as his team won the 2012 National Invitational Tournament. In his junior year, Powell enjoyed a breakout college basketball season as he averaged 14.9 points and 8.4 rebounds in 34 games which earned him the Pac-12 Most Improved Player of the Year award. He also further earned First-team All-Pac-12, Pac-12 All-Academic second team honors, and second-team NABC All-District. Powell kept up his performances both in and off the court as he was again a First-team All-Pac-12 selection while also winning the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and earning a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention selection.

Upon graduating, Dwight Powell was selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the 45th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft although his rights were soon after traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and later again to the Boston Celtics. Powell spent about 3 months with the Celtics, managing only 5 appearances as he mostly featured for their development league affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.

In December 2014, he was again traded to the Dallas Mavericks where he was finally able to settle down even though he, in the beginning, he had to prove himself by going on multiple assignments to the Mavs’ own development league affiliate, the Texas Legends.

Dwight Powell Family – Parents

It is not clear if Dwight Powell’s parents were ever married or they actually just split up when he was very young. His mother, Jacqueline Weir, was a West Indies-born bank executive in Boston while his father, Harlan Powell, is a white Canadian who lives in Toronto.

Jacqueline Weir was primarily responsible for raising her son. She didn’t have a formal education when she was growing but was able to receive a good education through night school before being able to fight to attain the heights that she got to. Her struggles made her instill the value of academics in her son who she made promise her that he would complete the requirements for a degree before going to follow his dreams of playing professional basketball.

Ms. Weir passed away on September 13, 2013, at a hospital in Melrose, Massachusets due to failing health from breast cancer. His teammates and coaches from Stanford University notably flew out to Boston to attend her funeral.
