During his investigation, Dale Cooper found out that the killer was Laura’s father, Leland Palmer (Ray Wise). Palmer carried out the act while possessed by a demonic entity—Killer BOB. The original season ended on a cliffhanger. Cooper was trapped into the Black Lodge, an extra-dimensional place by BOB. He subsequently, let out Cooper’s doppelgänger who he uses as his physical access to the world.

Kyle MacLachlan reprised his role in the 1992 film prequel, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. In 2017, MacLachlan returned to lead an ensemble both new and returning cast members in the third season of 18 episodes titled Twin Peaks: The Returning. Set 25 years after the events of the original series, it debuted on the 21st of May 2017 with its finale airing on September 17, 2017. The season garnered critical acclaim, with various publications dubbing it the best television show of 2017.
