Tevin Coleman is described as electrifying when he’s out on the field, playing the game he knows best. The American football running back for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL), was picked in the 2015 NFL Draft after keeping up an impressive record while playing college football at Indiana from 2012 to 2014.

Before football, Tevin Coleman was a 100-meter sprinter and long-jumper; he was considered one of the best in the state of Illinois as a high schooler but he chose to settle for Football and he sure excelled at it. Coleman became the 18th player in NCAA Division I FBS history to reach 2,000-yards rushing mark in one season. As impressive as that seems, there’s more to the ‘Rock’, as he is fondly called, than just the game.

Tevin Coleman’s Biography

Tevin Coleman was born on April 16, 1993, in Tinley Park, Illinois, to Liberian parents Wister and Adlevia Coleman. Growing up in the city, he attended Bethlehem Temple Missionary Baptists Church where he sang in the church choir.

The story behind his nickname ‘Rock,’ as given to him by his father, borders on the miracle of his birth. As the story goes, Coleman was born prematurely, 10 weeks early and weighed only about 3 pounds, too small to fit into the palm of a hand. Doctors said he had only 20 percent chance of survival, but he pulled through and survived to the amazement of many. He also went on to live a full life and to become the unexpected; an athlete.

Although Baseball is reportedly his first love, he was largely influenced by the park near his home where teenagers wore helmets and shoulder pads and engaged in their own version of the American pass time.

He finished high school at Oak Forest High School in Oak Forest, Illinois, where he participated actively in sports. He was on the school’s track & field team, competing as a jumper and sprinter. He was among the best 100-meter sprinters and long-jumpers in the state of Illinois. During his senior year at Oak Forest, Tevin Coleman rushed a total of 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Career

Coming out of high school, Coleman chose Indiana over scholarship offers from Georgia Tech, Minnesota, and Michigan State, partly because he wanted to stay close to home. Ranked as No. 37 running back nationally in 2012, he began playing college football as a true freshman for the University of Indiana. While with the Indiana Hossier, Coleman played in 12 games with two starts and rushed for 225 yards on 51 attempts; one touchdown; 566 kick return yards.

Playing as a sophomore in 2013, he only played 9 games and missed three after sustaining an ankle sprain; he finished the year with 958 rushing yards on 131 carries and 12 touchdowns. On November 25, 2014, Coleman was named, alongside running backs  (Wisconsin) and  (Nebraska) as one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Awards.

During his junior season in 2014, he finished with 2,036 yards, making him the 18th player in NCAA Division I FBS history to reach 2,000-yard rushing mark in one season. The score also broke the school’s single-season record initially held by the former professional football player, Vaughn Dunbar.

On December 29, 2014, Coleman announced his decision to skip senior season and enter the 2015 NFL Draft. He began his professional career in 2015 after signing with the Atlanta Falcons on a four-year contract worth $3.2 with a $745,244 signing bonus. So far, he has been a groundbreaker in the game, playing a total of 40 games, rushing 1,540 yards; with 14 touchdowns; 5 forced fumble and only 3 losses. His touchdown reception during the 34 – 23 victory over the Green Bay Packers in 2017 season, was the first receiving touchdown in the new stadium’s history.

Personal Life

In November 2017, Coleman became the father to a set of adorable twins; a boy and a girl. The kids were birthed by his girlfriend, Ahkeilah Murib who he has been with for quite some time now.

Is He Deaf?

There is no question about Tevin Coleman’s hearing ability, however, speculations abound especcially because he shares the same last name as Derrick Coleman who is NFL’s first deaf offensive player for the Atlanta Falcons. It isn’t clear whether the two are related and since none of them have deemed it fit to address the speculations, it is safe to think they are not related unless they say other wise.

Body Measurements

Height: 5’11”
Weight: 206lbs
Arm Strength: 32″
Hands: 8 5/8″

Strength: Coleman has a dangerous jump cut and can instantly change gaps to outrun linebackers, according to NFL. With his fluid and flexible lower body, he can naturally change direction without gearing down; plus, he stays square to the line in readiness to hit turbo. He’s also described as a violent run finisher who can duck shoulder and throw a heavy forearm into his tackler without giving in. His speed is so quick that linebackers and safeties often fall into poor angles, leading to long touchdowns.

It is a matter of fact that half his 28 career rush touchdowns were over 43 yards and 8 over 64 yards.

Weakness: In all that strength comes a weakness that needs slight improvements like learning when to keep run play-side and having enough patience to allows back-side cutback lanes to develop.
