Rufus Sewell has been in front of the big screen since 1991. Since then, he has honed his craft to become one of Hollywood’s most loved and celebrated antagonists. Sewell has appeared in may antagonists roles on movies such as The Legend of Zorro, A Knight’s Tale, and Helen of Troy.

Rufus has also played various television roles in series such as The Pillars of the Earth, Zem, The Man in the High Castle, and Eleventh Hour. Sewell’s stage performances include playing the role of Septimus Hodge in Tom Stoppard’s Acardia and playing Jan on Rock ‘n’ Roll. He earned a Tony Award nomination and won an Olivier Award for his work on the latter.

Who is Rufus Sewell?

The English actor was born into a family that was very appreciative of the arts. He was born Rufus Frederik Sewell on October 29, 1967, in Twickenham, London. His mother Jo was a waitress and an artist from Wales, while his father was from Australia and worked as an animator with some famous names such as The Beatles.

However, the bond in the family was broken when his parents ended their marriage and his father, William died five years later when Rufus was about 10 years old. His formal and acting education saw him attend Orleans Park School, West Thames College, and London’s Central School of Speech and Drama.

After appearing in a few stage productions, Sewell’s career finally gained some much-needed traction in 1993. He was involved in the movie Dirty Weekend, and in 7 episodes of the BBC television series Middlemarch. In the same year, he worked on the stage production Rock ‘n’ Roll which would eventually earn him his first awards as an actor. These included an Olivier Award, an Evening Standard Award in the category of Best Actor, and a Critics’ Circle Award.

The rest of the 90’s saw Rufus appear in movies such as Cold Comfort Farm (1995); Dark City (1998); and Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel, and Laurence (1998)Perhaps one of his most significant projects came with him playing the role of Thomas Clarkson, William Wilberforce’s campaigner in the movie Amazing Grace in 2006. The movie was a narration of William Wilberforce’s fight in the halls of politics to abolish slavery in Britain. His role in the movie was in stark contrast to his well-established perception of being a villain. An issue that the actor has revealed does not sit well with him.

Since the 2000’s, Rufus has taken on over 40 movie and TV series appearances. These include Bless the Child (2000); ShakespeaRE-Told (2005); The Illusionist (2006); Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012); Hercules (2014); Killing Jesus (2015); and Gods of Egypt (2016).

 

In 2015, the actor did voicing for the character of Sir Claude in the animated adventure-comedy Blinky Bill the Movie. His voicing endeavors have also seen him narrate eleven novels in the James Bond series into CDs for HarperCollins publication.

Wife, Son, Daughter, Girlfriend

Rufus, like his father, knows what the end of a marriage feels like. He has been around the matrimonial block twice in his life. His first marriage was to Yasmin Abdallah who worked as a fashion journalist. They tied the knot in 1999. However, the union did not last long as they called time on the relationship the next year.

In 2004, the Brit married someone closer to his industry. His second wife, Amy Gardner is a scriptwriter and producer. Garder has executive produced a plethora of movies. Some of them include Dirty Money (2013); Identicals (2015); and The Time of their Lives (2017).

The couple’s marriage lasted for two years, ending in 2006. They had a son together two prior to their marriage. William Douglas Sewell was born in 2002. Rufus Sewell also has a daughter.

Over time, the actor has been rumored to have been relationships with several high profilers. Some of the names dropped include Kate Winslet (1995-1996), Helena Bonham Carter (1999), Donna Air (2000), and Alice Eve (2006-2008).
