In addition to playing for the national team of his home country, Croatian-born professional footballer Domagoj Vida plies his trade at club level with Turkish side, Beşiktaş. A versatile defender, Vida stands out for his ability to play in almost all defensive positions, however, he is usually deployed as a central defender or a right-back.
Vida made his way through the youth teams of the Croatian national football team before earning his call-up to the senior squad in 2010. Domagoj Vida’s Biography
Domagoj Vida was born to Željka and Rudika Vida on April 29, 1989, in Donji Mihojlac, a municipality in the Slavonia region of Croatia. He comes from a family of prolific footballers as his father, Rudika Vida, is a retired professional footballer as well as his brother, Hrvoje Vida. He started playing football at a tender age with NK Jedinstvo Donji Miholjac, a club in his hometown.
After several years within the academy, Vida joined professional Turkish club, NK Osijek where he spent the rest of his youth career. He eventually made his senior team debut with Osijek at the start of the 2006-07 season. In his 4-season stint with the club’s senior team, Domagoj Vida gained the attention of scouts from several top European sides.
On his 21st birthday, Vida signed a contract German Bundesliga club, Bayer Leverkusen. In addition to 8 UEFA Europa League appearances, Vida’s league debut as a substitute on March 5, 2011, was his only appearance in the Bundesliga. On June 14, 2011, Vida moved to serial Croatian league champions, Dinamo Zagreb. However, his only season at the club was marred by a number of off-the-pitch controversies.
On January 2, 2013, Domagoj Vida penned a 5-year contract with Ukranian club side, FC Dynamo Kyiv in a deal which had him remain with the club till 2018. The versatile defender had a relatively eventful spell with the Ukranian giants and also played a crucial role in their 2015 Ukrainian Premier League title win, their first in 6 years. At the expiration of his contract with Dynamo Kyiv, Domagoj Vida transferred to Turkish club side Beşiktaş J.K. The Croatian-born football star signed a 4 and a half year deal with the club in January 2018.
International Career
On the international front, Domagoj Vida played for the Croatian national team at the U-19, U-20 and U-21 levels. After getting called up to the senior team, Vida made his international debut on May 28, 2010. He featured in the team’s successful UEFA Euro 2012 qualifiers and also appeared in the finals where Croatia suffered an early exit.
Vida was also named in the team’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, however, he remained a backup player and never made the starting line-up throughout their short spell in the tournament. The versatile defender had a more regular spot during the qualifications and the finals of the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament where they were eliminated in the knockout stage by eventual champions, Portugal.
He started all of Croatia’s qualification matches for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In June 2018, the talented defender was listed in Croatia’s 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia where he played a major role in the team’s advancement to their first final in the history of the tournament. Vida scored a crucial 100th-minute goal in the team’s July 7 quarterfinal fixture against the host country Russia which Croatia eventually won on penalties.

Domagoj Vida is currently married to former beauty queen and model, Ivana Gugić. The duo is said to have met back in 2013 at a nightclub in Croatia’s capital city of Zagreb. On September 5, 2015, the couple welcomed their first child, a son named David. After 4 years of dating, Vida and Gugić eventually tied the knot on June 16, 2017. The ceremony was held at the 18th-century parish church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and St. Peregrine in the coastal Istria city of Umag.
Born in Metković, in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County of Croatia, Ivana Gugić was the winner of the 2014 Queen of Croatia beauty pageant. In addition to her flourishing modeling career, she also studied at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management.
