Who is Peja Stojakovic?
Peja was born as Predrag Stojakovic on June 9, 1977, to Serbian parents Branka Stojakovic and her husband Miodrag. He was born in Pozega, SFR Yugoslavia and was raised in Belgrade, Serbia. His father was an army veteran who fought during the Yugoslav wars from 1991 to 1999. There is no information about his childhood, siblings, and educational background.
He started playing basketball from a very young age and when he was fifteen, he joined a Serbian basketball team KK Crvena Zvezda with which he won a national championship title. The following year, he relocated to Greece and there, he played for PAOK basketball club of the Greek League from 1993 to 1998.

While he was still playing in Greece, Peja was chosen by the Sacramento Kings as the 14th pick during the NBA draft of 1996. He was signed by the Kings during the 1998 lockout season. Upon joining the Kings, Peja played the first two seasons from the bench and finally got his breakthrough in 2001. He finished the season with an average of 5.9 rebounds and 20.4 points per game. In addition to that, he became the second Most Improved Player of the year in 2001.
During the 2002 season, Peja finished the season recording 21.2 points per game and was named to the NBA All-Star team. He participated in the All-Star three-point shooting weekend where he emerged the winner. The following season, he averaged 19.2 points per game and also won the three-point shooting weekend contest. In 2004, he finished the season as the second-best in scoring, thus averaging 24.2 points per game. He came fourth in the season’s MVP voting list and was named to the NBA All-Star second team.
In 2006, Peja was traded to the Indiana Pacers where he finished his eight-year career with the Kings the same year and signed up with the New Orleans Hornets. He penned a five-year deal worth $64 million with the team. While with the Hornets, Peja created an NBA franchise history by becoming the first player to score 20 straight points in his first game. However, his impressive season was cut short as a result of injuries. The following year, he helped the Hornets to clinch their first division title and finished second in the NBA championship.
Alongside Jerryd Bayless, Peja was traded with the Toronto Raptors in 2010. There, he featured in a few games; due to a left knee injury, he was ruled out for the rest of the season. He later signed with Dallas Mavericks in 2011; leading the team to clinch the NBA Championship title. In December 2011, Peja announced his retirement; citing injuries as the reason behind his sudden retirement.
