Not every day do we see or hear of celebrities claiming to have drawn inspiration from their grandmothers. Gerard Way is an exception in that category. The multi-talented Artist is very dynamic, combining being a musician and a comic writer. He is best known for being a co-founder and the lead vocalist of the rock band My Chemical Romance.

Born as Gerard Arthur Way in Summit, New Jersey on April 9, 1977, Gerard was raised as a Catholic in Belleville, New Jersey along with Michael James Way, his younger brother, by their parents, Donald Way and Donna Lee. Gerard Way is an American by nationality but also of Italian and Scottish heritage, owing to his father being half Scottish and his mother Italian.
Gerard is a singer, songwriter, musician and comic book writer. His enthusiasm for singing began when he was a little boy. He received lots of encouragements from his maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush. Her everyday encouragement made him fall more in love with singing, writing and drawing. According to Gerard, she was his only source of inspiration while growing up. She taught him to sing, write, draw and perform, which eventually led to his passion for these Arts to increase. He got his first guitar at the age of eight, which came as a gift from his grandmother.
Gerard attended Belleville high school in Essex country and graduated in 1995. It was while in high school that he wrote his first comic book On Raven’s Wings in 2013. He likewise played the role of Peter pan while in fourth grade in elementary school. After he graduated from high school, he chose to pursue his dream in Art and applied to study at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He graduated from the Art school in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.
In 2001, he did his internship in Cartoon Network, also in the same year, he co-founded the rock band My Chemical Romance with his brother, Michael Way as the band’s bassist.
Aside from singing, Gerard plays the piano and rhythm guitar. His music genre can be best described as alternative rock, pop punk, emo and post-hardcore. The band went on performing, releasing singles and albums for years up until they disbanded in 2013.
In 2014, Gerard announced that he had signed a record deal with Warner Bros as a solo artist. In the same year, Way released his first studio album as a solo artist named Hesitant Allen.
Gerard Way witnessed the 9/11 attack first hand while working at Cartoon Network. The 9/11 attack made him see reasons to explore the world outside the basement of a comic writer and fulfill his goals as a singer.
Gerard has a history of being an alcoholic and a drug addict. He also got in trouble with the cops on several occasions but appears to be sober today.

The pair of Way and Ann started dating in June 2007, after Way broke up with his ex-girlfriend Eliza Cuts. They then got married on September 3, 2007.
On the 27th of May, in the same year as the couple’s second wedding anniversary, they welcomed into the world their first child, Bandit Lee Way.
