Amanda Freitag is an American chef known for being the judge of the Food Network reality series Chopped. She is also a co-host on American Diner Revival with Ty Pennington. Thanks to her appearances on various television shows, Amanda was brought to the spotlight. She appeared on the Martha Stewart Show in 2009, she also gave recipes for the fifth season of the breast cancer show which is now canceled.
A year after her appearance on the Martha show, Amanda Freitag was a judge for Chopped, a culinary game show. She also appeared as a competitor at the Next Iron Chef second season where she lost to Bobby Flay. Amanda returned to the show again in 2012 and lost in its fifth season to Alex Guarnaschelli. She participated in an episode of Iron Chef America that same year alongside Madison Cowan, who was the winner of the chopped show. Amanda Freitag’s Biography
Amanda Freitag was born on the 11th of May 1972 in Cedar Grove, New Jersey in the United States of America to Kathleen, her mother, and Paul, her father. Amanda grew up with her two brothers; Jason and Justin. She attended Cedar Grove High School which was a public high school previously called Memorial High School.
While Amanda Freitag was in high school, her teacher discovered she has great culinary skills and therefore encouraged her to enroll at the Culinary Institute of America. She then went to the Culinary Institute of America and graduated in 1989. Upon graduation, she got hired by a popular French-Taiwanese restaurant, Vong situated in New York.
Career
Freitag worked under Jean-Georges Vongerichten during her time at Vong until 1994. Jean-Georges commands restaurants in various capitals of the world. He has various cookbooks to his name. Amanda eventually left Vong and went to work at Verbena under Chef Diane Forley. Diane is the owner of the Verbena Restaurant and Courtyard Garden. She is the lead Chef in the New American Cuisine.
Amanda Freitag traveled to Italy and France after she finished her time at Verbena Restaurant and Courtyard Garden. She stayed in Paris, France for a short while working at the L’Arpege restaurant owned by Alain Passard. After garnering a wealth of experience in France, Amanda returned to the US to partner with restaurant consultant Godfrey Polistina opening a restaurant called Cesca Enoteca and Trattoria Restaurant in 2003. The restaurant was situated at the upper west side of New York City and they served American-Italian food. She worked as the chef in the restaurant.
Executive Chef Positions
When Freitag eventually left Cesca, she took the position of the Executive Chef at Harrison, a seasonal modern American restaurant. She worked there till 2010. This was when the owner, Jimmy Bradley returned and took his position as the chef. Four years later, Amanda took the position of the Executive Chef at the Empire Diner in Manhattan where she worked for a year. It was a vogue and retro diner restaurant.
Asides from cooking, Freitag is also a prolific writer and has authored a cookbook titled The Chef Next Door: A Pro Chef’s Recipes for Fun, Fearless Home Cooking. The aim of the book was to help improve the readers’ confidence and add joy to their home cooking. It is a full-on practical book with information, techniques, and over 100 recipes from Food Network.

Amanda loves striking a balance between her professional and personal life; she enjoys keeping her personal life behind the curtains. In addition to having a great passion for cooking, she also loves traveling around the world and collecting menus from restaurants for her collection.
