Marcell whose full name is Marcell Ozuna Idelfonso is from the Dominican Republic. He was born on the 12th of November 1990 in Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, Dominican Republic. He is obviously of Dominican nationality but comes from an African ethnicity.
His family then was a middle-class one and Marcell Ozuna grew up with his two sisters and a brother. Reports have it that his father worked as a painter while their mother augmented her husband’s earning with her’s as a housekeeper. Baseball was a game that was not strange to the Ozuna’s as Marcell’s uncle Pablo Ozuna was a former baseball player.
Marcell Ozuna fanned his baseball interest by playing as often as time would permit. Doing this he honed his batting and pitching skills setting himself aside from the rest of the pack. It wasn’t long before he got noticed beyond the shores of his country.
He signed his first contract with American Florida based baseball team, Florida Marlins on February 15, 2008, as a non-drafted free agent. He continued playing in his home country’s Summer League where he hit 79 with 6 home runs and 43 RBI and 8 SB in a total of 63 games. Coming to 2009, Marcell began playing for Gulf Coast League Marlins where he recorded 313 hits with 5 home runs and 39 Runs batted in 55 games.
At this time, it was only appropriate that Marcell Ozuna’s skill gets rewarded in view of the advancement of his career. He was promoted in 2012 to the A-Advanced baseball team, Jupiter and in the following year, the sharp hitter made his MLB debut for the Miami Marlins on April 30, 2013. Marcell Ozuna saw regular playing time in 2014, playing 153 games, batting 269 games where he made 23 home runs and 85 RBI. Come the year 2016, Marcel impressed a lot playing for the National League in the 2016 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. He became the 8th player to hit at least 35 home runs in the league.
On the 14th of December 2017, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals to make way for Sandy Alcántara, Magneuris Sierra, Zac Gallen, and Daniel Castano to join the Marlins. Reports from January 2018 had it that the trade was worth $9 million for a one year contract.
In the course of his young career, he has been honored with the following laurels; Silver Slugger Award (2017), All-Star (2016-017) and Gold Glove Award (2017). As he continues to play, we expect more honors and awards to come to him.
