So here is someone who never played the game, but has built his career to the point where he is a reputable name in the world of college basketball. Frank Martin has coached basketball at high school and collegiate level sine 1985. However, he only got his first shot as head coach of a college team in 2007, following the resignation of his boss.

Martin’s career has seen him qualify his teams for five NCAA Tournaments, earning himself the title of Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 2010.

Frank Martin Bio (Wiki)

Frank Jose Martin was the first member of his family to be born in America. His mother and father, Lourdes Perez Martin had fled Cuba due to the repressive political regime of the time. They gave birth to Martin on March 23, 1966, in Miami, Florida.

In 1993, he graduated from Florida International University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. At the time he was working multiple jobs to cater for himself, including his job as a bouncer at a local nightclub and head coach at Miami Senior High School for the boys’ junior varsity team, a job he had started in 1985. Frank Martin did not have plans to leave his nightclub duties or become a full-time coach until he survived a shootout incident which was orchestrated by a group of men he had thrown out of the club earlier for fighting.

After walking away from the nightclub, and serving eight years at Miami High School, he was offered his first varsity coaching job at North Miami High School, shortly after his graduation from Florida International University (FIU). During a second stint at Miami Senior a couple of years later, the team clinched the state championships three times in a row from 1996 to 1998. However, they would later forfeit the 1998 title due to some recruiting violations. This led to his dismissal in 1999, although he was never proven to have a part in the violations.

Frank’s next job saw him spend one year at Booker T. Washington High School which was his last year as a high school coach.

In 2000, Frank Martin was brought on by Northeastern University as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He spent four years there before moving to the University of Cincinnati in 2004. In 2006, Cincinnati’s head coach, Bob Huggins was hired by Kansas State University, and Huggins took Martin with him. After a year together at Kansas, Huggins resigned and Martin took his place as head coach.

Frank Martin ended his first season as head coach with some notable wins. Their first victory was over local rivals, the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Ultimately, Frank led the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament, their first berth since 1966.

In March 2010, Martin’s exploits with the Wildcats saw him given the honor of the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year. He rewarded this by lifting the team into the Elite 8, making it their best outing in the tournament since 1988.

On March 2, 2012, Martin replaced Darrin Horn as the head coach of the University of South Carolina’s basketball team. Frank’s first two seasons at USC were abysmal and even saw him lose his cool several times on the court. In the subsequent seasons, Frank Martin oversaw the recovery of the team as they ended their non-conference and SEC-conference campaigns in a much better position than the first two seasons.

The 2016-2017 season was Martin’s best year yet with the USC Gamecocks, as he earned the team a place as a No.7 seed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. They beat some strong opponents to advance to the Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4, where they lost 73-77 to the Gonzaga. This was the first time ever in the school’s history that they were making it as far as the Elite 8.

Frank Martin finished the 2017-2018 season tied at the 11th position with an overall season record of 17-16.

His Family: Kids and Wife, Anya Martin

Frank Martin is married to Anya Martin since 2006. The basketball coach often gushes about her talking about how she is the backbone of the family. Anya who has stood by him throughout his collegiate career understands first-hand the pressures that come with the world of athletics. After all, she was a champion sprinter herself back in her days at University of Massachusetts – Amherst.

One of Frank’s reasons for leaving KSU for USC was so that Anya could be closer to her mother, Valerie Forest, who is battling with breast cancer. The couple has also raised approximately $300,000 together for cancer research.

The couple has three kids: Christian, Amalia, and Brandon Martin.

Height

Frank Martin has broad shoulders and an overall hunky appearance that makes him look domineering. However, by basketball standards, he isn’t that tall. The coach stands at a height of 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 m) and weighs about 160 lbs (72.6 kg).
