Miguel Cotto Vasquez will go down in history as the man who put Puerto Rico on the Boxing map. Armed with a humble and unassuming demeanor, Miguel endeared himself to the boxing world for his off the ring humility and simplicity. In the ring, Miguel was a different beast, a tenacious fighter who though lacking in size and speed was an exceptional technical fighter.
Bio (Age)
Miguel Cotto’s professional boxing career spanned almost two decades from 2001 to 2017. He will be famously remembered in the boxing world as the first Puerto Rican to win world titles in four weight classes. Miguel was at the peak of his powers between the years of 2007 and 2009, that was further proven when he was ranked an impressive number seventh in the pound for pound ranking by The Ring Magazine.
Miguel Cotto was born on the 29th of October, 1980 in Rhode Island, to Puerto Rican parents. Miguel before the age of two had to relocate back to Caguas in Puerto Rico. You could say the boxing genes was very much present in his family with several of his relatives linked to boxing. His late father Miguel Cotto Snr, his second cousin Abner Cotto, his former boxing trainer and uncle Evangelista Cotto and his brother Jose Miguel Cotto were all boxers with varying degrees of success.
Miguel began his career as a hard hitter and pressure fighter, but over the years he has evolved into a more calculated and refined boxer/puncher as he has moved up in the weight classes. Miguel as a kid was fat and began boxing primarily to lose weight. At that point, he never anticipated that boxing would become a career path.
He was taken by his uncle to Bairoa Gym in Caguas where the young Cotto developed into an amateur fighter. His career kick-started when he defeated former world title contender John Brown in the tenth round by a decision. Cotto had a career scare when he suffered a career-threatening injury in 2001 when he had a car crash while driving to a gymnasium at 5:00 am, he broke his arm and needed to be in the hospital to attain full recovery.
Cotto completed his boxing career with a total number of 47 fights and 41 wins. Out of the 41 wins, 33 of them were by a Knock Out, which left Cotto with 6 career losses. Cotto has been widely considered as Puerto Rico’s biggest ever sporting export and is regarded as one of the best boxers from his country alongside the likes of Wilfredo Gomez, Felix Trinidad, Wilfred Benitez, Hector Camacho and Carlos Ortiz.
One of Miguel Cotto’s more outstanding duels was his fight against Antonio Margarito, it ended in a bloody defeat for Cotto. In Margarito’s subsequent fight against Shane Mosley, officials discovered that his hands were wrapped with a loaded substance believed to be plaster of Paris. It is widely believed Margarito used the same trick to pull off his earlier victory against Miguel Cotto.
Three and a half years later, Miguel was pitted against Margarito in the second defense of his WBA title and this time, Miguel took his revenge in brutal fashion. Margarito had taken hits to his right eye a year earlier in his fight with Manny Pacquiao. In one of the most bloody bouts ever, Miguel aimed his revenge solely at Margarito’s right eye, leaving it a swollen, bloody mess. Margarito had to quit fighting for more than four years to recuperate from the inflicted damage.
When he retired from professional and competitive boxing, Miguel built up and ran a boxing promotion called “Promociones Miguel Cotto”. The agency sets up fight cards but with the geographical restraint of only operating in Puerto Rico.
He also established a non-profit organization known as “El Angel” that encourages physical activity as well as measures against infant fatness which he suffered from.
