Marouane Fellaini Biography
Fellaini was born Marouane Fellaini-Bakkioui in Etterbeek, Brussels, Belgium on the 22nd of November 1987 to Abdellatif and Hafida Fellaini. His father, Abdellatif, was a former goalkeeper who played for Moroccan clubs Raja Casablanca and Hassania d’Agadir before becoming a bus driver after migrating to Belgium with his wife to seek a better life. He currently serves as his son’s agent and can be seen attending his games.
While growing up, Fellaini excelled in track events as well as in football. It is reported that he would usually choose to run to school rather than take the bus as his peers would do because of his abilities. By the time he was 8-years-old, he joined Anderlecht’s academy where he played as a striker.
In 1997, at the age of 10, Fellaini left Anderlecht to join Mons because his father had gotten a new job in that city. He spent three years at Mons before again moving to R. Francs Borains where he spent two years. Between 2002 and 2004, Fellaini played for Sporting Charleroi before signing his first professional contract with Standard Liege after playing for their youth side for two years. At 17 years of age, Fellaini was touted as the next big thing out of Belgium. He was now playing as a box-to-box midfielder who had an outstanding stamina and heading ability, thanks to his height.
In 2008, he won the Ebony Shoe, an award given annually in Belgium to the best African or of African origin players in the Belgian Pro League. That same year, following reported interest from clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Marouane Fellaini chose to join Everton for a record fee of around 15 million pounds.
Fellaini was money well spent for the Merseyside club as he hit the ground running. He scored 9 goals from midfield in his debut season under manager David Moyes and was named Everton’s Young Player of the Year. He went on to play a total of 177 games over a 6-year period for Everton before joining Moyes who had been handpicked as a replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
United paid Everton 27.5 million pounds for Fellaini’s services but the Belgian midfielder is yet to live up to the expectations the United hoped for. He managed only 15 starts that season and was usually on the receiving end of criticism from fans who disliked Moyes’ management style.
Marouane Fellaini has since then, never truly won back the hearts of Manchester United fans despite having played for three different managers in the club.
Wife or Girlfriend, Is Fellaini Married?
Marouane Fellaini has been linked with a couple of women, most famously, former Miss Belgium contestant Lara Binet and then Jeffers Roxanne, the ex-girlfriend of his fellow professional footballer, Ashley Cole.
Binet, who was crowned Miss Liege in 2011 before becoming a finalist in the Miss Belgium beauty pageant, started dating Fellaini while he was playing for Standard Liege. Throughout their relationship, the two were said to be inseparable, with some reports speculating that the couple had exchanged vows. The couple, however, broke up amicably in 2012 following his move to Manchester United.
While at United, he notably dated Ms. Roxanne who met the football star through a mutual friend. She was said to have liked him because of his trademark afro.
Marouane Fellaini’s Brother
Marouane Fellaini has two brothers; Hamza, his elder brother and an identical twin brother named Mansour. All three Fellaini boys have the famous Afro, however, it is Mansour and Marouane who wear it best.
