As far as soccer is concerned, one of the greatest footballing countries in the world is Brazil and one of the greatest clubs is Real Madrid. One person who plays at both ends is Marcelo Vieira. The professional footballer who plays as left back and winger for both his club and country has been named as part of Brazil’s 2018 World Cup squad in Russia. Here is all to know about him.
Marcelo Vieira’s Biography
The Brazilian defence player was born Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior on 12 May 1988 in Rio de Janeiro. Raised in a rather very poor family, Marcelo had always played futsal as a child that even before he was a teenager, it was apparent that he would have a career there.
The game, Futsal with which he began playing, is an indoor form of football, but before he went too far, he switched easily to football as it is today.
Family
The Real Madrid star defender has his life all around his family members. While there is very little that is known about his parents, it is known that while his father was a fireman his mother was a teacher among other things.
For him, one of the most important people in his life was his grandfather, Don Pedro, who had encouraged him to keep playing football even when his mother sometimes objected because he destroyed things around the house. At a point in his life, Marcelo Vieira had wanted to leave football when he was very young, but his grandfather encouraged him to continue.
In fact, Don Pedro did not only go with him to most of his training, he also worked very hard to get transport fare for the two of them. Marcelo would remain very close to his grandfather until 2014 of cancer during the World Cup. Another member of his family that he is close to apart from Don Pedro is his sister, Julia Vieira.
The Brazilian national team player is now married to Clarisse Alves. The two met since he was 15 and shortly afterwards, they began dating. They got married in 2008 and in 2009, they had their first son, Enzo Gattuso Alves Vieira. Their next child, Liam was born in 2015.
Football Career – Real Madrid C.F
Marcelo Vieira began his football career with Fluminense youth team in Brazil in 2002. He remained with the team until 2005 when he got promoted to the senior team with which he played until 2006.
Having played just 30 games for the club, the left-back had already attracted scouts from many giant clubs including Sevilla and Real Madrid where his icon and countryman, Roberto Carlos was playing at the time. Although he had almost reached a deal with Sevilla before getting to know that Real Madrid was interested in him, Marcelo opted to go for the latter club.
Since signing the contract with the La Liga side, Marcelo has not had any reason to change clubs. With over 320 games for the club and more than 20 goals, he has won 4 La Liga titles, 2 Copa del Rey titles, 3 Supercopa de España, 3 UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. More so, he has won 4 UEFA Champions League in 5 years. In the 2017-2018 Champions League, he provided an assist for Gareth Bales to net in the second goal to help the team clinch the title.
Professional Football – Brazil
He made his debut in the Brazilian Jersey in 2005 when he played for the country’s Under-17 team. He found himself playing for the country’s Under-20 in 2007. A year later, he was back in the Brazilian jersey, but this time he was playing for the Under-23 team. That said, he has played for the national team since 2006 and he has recorded 52 games already, scoring six goals.
While playing with the national team, Marcello took a part in the 2008 Olympic and returned home with a bronze medal. He would return to the same stage again in 2012 only to perform better and return with a silver medal.
Along with other star players like , Marcelo made the team that played the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup which the Brazilian team won after defeating Spain in the Finals.
On the stage of the highest footballing event in the world, he got called to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and he has been named as part of the team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
As an individual, the Brazilian player has also made the UEFA Team of the Year, EA Sports FIFA Team of the Year, La Liga’s Team of the Season, and FIFA FIFPro World XI 2nd team twice.
