Although Doc Rivers currently serves as head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, not many have forgotten his days as an NBA’s point guard with strong defensive skills. In his thirteen years (1983-1996) as a player, Doc played for Los Angeles Clippers (the same team he now coaches). He also played for Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.

After retiring from playing, Doc Rivers took up a coaching job in 1999, first with Orlando Magic, then with Boston Celtics and now with his former team Los Angeles Clippers. He has been with L.A Clippers since 2013.

Not much about his early days and upbringing is readily available online but, we, however, know that Doc was born October 13, 1961, as Glenn Anton Rivers.

And on how he got to be called ‘Doc’, Rivers had attended a summer basketball camp wearing a T-shirt with the inscription  Dr. J on it, which was immediately spotted by then-Marquette assistant coach Rick Majerus who took to calling him Doc, the players at camp followed suit and the name has stuck ever since.

Rivers’ family is one full of athletes and NBA players. His uncle Jim Brewer is a former NBA player, as well as two of his cousins Byron Irvin and Ken Singleton. You wouldn’t actually be wrong to say Sports runs in the family as Rivers’ children are emerging as notable sportsmen and women.

Career

Doc River actually began showing his basketball skill right from his high school days. He was McDonald’s All-American for Proviso East High School and was part of the national team that represented the U.S in the 1982 FIBA World Championship and came back with the silver medal.

Rivers was drafted in the second round (31st overall) of the 1983 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks, after spending three seasons at Marquette University, from where he graduated. The next seven seasons saw him assisting star Dominique Wilkins as a starter in Atlanta recording great successes. He averaged a double-double during the 1986/87 season recording 12.8 points and 10.0 assists per game.  After his time in Atlanta, he also spent a year with L.A Clippers as a starter, two seasons with New York Knicks, and then with San Antonio Spurs before finally retiring from playing basketball in 1996, to begin a coaching career three days later in 1999.

He started off his coaching career at Orlando Magic. He coached the team for more than four NBA seasons, led the team which was predicted to finish last to a near playoff berth in 2000, thus, winning the coach of the year award. Unfortunately, he was fired in 2003 after a 1–10 start of the season. In 2004, he was hired by Boston Celtics. His first year with the team was met with severe criticisms, one worthy of note was by Bill Simmons who called for him to be fired.

Following the Celtics’ 109–93 win over the New York Knicks in 2008, Doc Rivers was conferred the honor to coach the 2008 NBA All-Star Game which held in New Orleans that year. That same year, Rivers won his first NBA Championship as a head coach after his team defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. In 2011, he signed a contract extension with the Celtics worth $35 million and by February 2013, Rivers recorded his 400th win with the Celtics in a 99–95 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

In June of the same year, his former team Los Angeles Clippers acquired him from the Celtics for an unprotected 2015 NBA first-round draft pick. He was also made the senior vice president of basketball operations on the team. In 2014, he was promoted to the post of president of basketball operations – a post he gave up in 2017.

In his first season as L.A Clippers’ head coach, he led the team to a franchise-record 57 wins, garnering the 3rd seed in the Western Conference. In 2014, he renewed his contract with the team, thus, he is still serving as Clippers’ head coach.

Rivers has been married to Kristen Rivers (née Campion) since 1986 and the two are blessed with four children – Jeremiah, Callie, Austin, and Spencer all of whom are also notable athletes. His oldest son Jeremiah had played NBA D-League for the Maine Red Claws, as well as for Indiana and Georgetown Universities.

His daughter Callie played volleyball for the University of Florida and then professionally in Puerto Rico. His second son Austin Rivers was drafted by the New Orleans Hornets with the 10th pick of the 2012 NBA draft, before then, he was a guard for Duke University for one year. In 2015, Austin joined Clippers where his father serves as head coach. This, of course, made Rivers the first NBA coach to coach his own son.

Rivers’ youngest son, Spencer, also played for Winter Park High School as a guard and also for UC Irvine.
