Nancy Kerrigan is one of such people as she is married to Jerry Solomon, her former agent. Nancy is an actress and former Olympic figure skater with the titles and accolades to prove it. In the early and mid-90s, she was in her prime, dazzling audiences with her skills on the ice. Her career saw her take home bronze, silver and gold medals.

Nancy Kerrigan’s Biography

Nancy who is the only daughter of her parents was born on October 13, 1969, in Stoneham, Massachusetts. Her parents Daniel Kerrigan and Brenda Kerrigan had two boys older than Nancy, Micheal, and Mark. The former Olympian comes from an obviously supportive and athletic-minded family. While her brothers took up hockey, she focused on figure skating at six years old. By the time she was eight years old, she started taking private lessons with her coach Theresa Martin while her father, Daniel drove the ice resurfacer at the local rink as payment for Nancy’s lessons. A year later, her lessons seemed to pay off as she bagged the Boston Open.

While working on her skating, she attended Stoneham high school, after which she got a degree in business from Emmanuel College in Boston. She continued under the tutelage of Theresa Martin until she was 16 years old. She then moved on to Denise Morrissey before going to Evy and Mary Scotvold. They remained her coaches throughout the rest of her competitive career.

In 1987, young Kerrigan came in fourth at the junior category of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She continued to improve throughout the years, climbing the national ranks while doing so. However, she wouldn’t really begin to reach the heights she did until the “compulsory figures” aspect of the game was eliminated in 1990. By then she was already fourth in the national rankings.

In 1991, Kerrigan’s prominence continued to grow as she came in third at the U.S. Figure Skating Championship behind teammates Tonya Harding (silver), and Kristi Yamaguchi (gold). She bettered this with a second place finish in the 1992 edition of the tournament. In the same year, she also won a bronze and silver medal at the Winter Olympics and the World Championships respectively.

In 1993 Kerrigan became a U.S champion after the current champion, Kristi Yamaguchi retired. However, that was the only good that happened to her career in that year as everything went downhill from there. Her disastrous performances saw her tumble to fifth on the world rankings. Meanwhile, before this time, she had some good news in her life off the ice. She had signed lucrative contracts with big brands like Evian, Seiko, Reebok, etc.

In order to get ready for the 1994 Winter Olympics, she decided to cancel everything else and focus solely on her training. She also hired a sports psychologist to help her handle the pressure of the competition.

The year started on a sour note for Kerrigan. On January 6, 1994, she was attacked with a police baton after a practice session. The culprit was Shane Stant, the husband of her rival Tonya Harding. The immediate aftermath of the attack was caught on tape and he was arrested. Kerrigan was forced to withdraw from the U.S. Championships but she recovered from the leg injuries she sustained quickly enough to participate in the 1994 Winter Olympics. Tonya was given a three-year probation, 500-hours community service and ordered to pay a fine of $100,000.

The attack has since been adapted severally and aired by big networks like ESPN and NBC. It was also made into a movie titled I, Tonya.

She won the silver medal for the Ladies Single Skating event at the Olympics. However, she would later lose this title and her gold medal after a bit of controversy involving fellow skater Oksana Baiul and one of the judges, Jan Hoffmann.

Kerrigan resigned from amateur competition at the end of the 1994 Olympics. She went on to appear in Ice Wars and a few other professional competitions. However, she did more work on various ice shows such as Champions on Ice, Broadway on Ice, and the musical Footloose. She also memorably hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live in 1994, which featured musical icon, Aretha Franklin. She was also on the Fox television program Skating with Celebrities (2006), the comedy feature film Blades of Glory (2007), and Dancing with the Stars (2005).

In 2004, she became a member of the United States Figure Skater Hall of Fame and was honored in 2008, at the Ice Theatre of New York’s annual benefit gala.

Family – Parents, Brother, Husband, Children

Nancy Kerrigan had to deal with a lot on the personal front while dealing with the stress of her career. A year after her retirement, she went to the altar with her agent, Jerry Solomon who had been married three times before and has a son from his second marriage. The union produced three children: Matthew (1996), Brian (2005), and Nicole (2008). The former pro skater revealed in early 2017, that the process of having her three children involved having to endure six miscarriages. She admits that this put a strain on her marriage.

On January 24, 2010, her father Daniel passed away. Her older brother, Mark was charged with her father’s death. However, Kerrigan and her family stood by him and supported him. The charges of manslaughter were eventually dropped and Mark was charged with assault & battery owing to the altercation that happened between him and his father prior to his death. He was sentenced to two-and-half years with six months suspended.

She also started a foundation, The Nancy Kerrigan Foundation, to cater for the visually impaired. This was in honor of her mother, Brenda Kerrigan, who was legally blind.
