Despite her recent run-in with the law which led to a prison term, Abby Lee Miller remains one of the choreographers who has written their names on the sands of time. She has hogged the headlines for all the right and wrong reasons.
She is an American dance instructor, choreographer, and the director and owner of Reign Dance Productions formerly known as Maryen Lorrain Dance Studio which she took over from her mother in 1995. Growing up, Abby Lee Miller learned dance basics from her mother who is also a dance teacher. After participating in multiple dance competitions, she was able to establish herself as a dance instructor and launched the Abby Lee Dance Company. She was also a part of seven seasons of the reality television series Dance Moms.
Everything seemed to be going the right way until 2010 when Miller filed for bankruptcy. Like that wasn’t enough, she was found guilty of felony bankruptcy fraud which attracted a sentence of one year and a day in a federal prison in May 2017.
Abby Lee Miller’s Bio, Age
The popular dance instructor was born on September 21, 1966, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she grew up. Her father is George L. Miller while her mother Maryen Lorrain is a dance teacher; little wonder why Abby became passionate about dancing from an early stage. She studied under her mother’s tutelage at the Maryen Lorrain Dance Studio, her mom’s studio which Miller later took over in 1995. Under her, the dance studio was renamed Reign Dance Productions.
In 1986, she got the certification of Dance Masters of America, making her a member of Dance Masters of Pennsylvania Chapter #10. However, her membership was rebuffed in 2012 when it seemed that her reality-TV show Dance Moms does not represent what the dance education stands for.
Miller started appearing in the Lifetime reality television show in 2011. The show depicts what practice sessions and performance competitions are like for the young students of the Abby Lee Dance Company. Notably, Abby is notorious for pushing her students too hard in the bid to get desired results from them.
Abby Lee Miller has also appeared on Dancing with the Stars as a guest judge.
Family: Who is Abby’s Husband, Daughter?
Oops! Looks like Abby Lee Miller is not cut out for marriage after all. Though she appeared to be in a relationship with Italian actor, Michael Padula, it turned out to be a charade to please her mother. The duo even went as far as getting engaged and making their relationship social media official. In January 2014, Abby shared a picture she took with her partner, confirming their engagement. Later in July the same year, there were rumours on how their engagement was fake.
Apparently, the whole scene was played out to please her mother who was battling cancer at the time. Currently, there’s no indication that Abby is in any relationship, thus, she is perceived to be single. There are no children in the picture as well.
Her Net Worth
Though she declared bankruptcy in 2010 and owed more than $400,000 in taxes, Abby Lee Miller is said to have amassed a net worth of $2 million dollars, thanks to her reality TV appearances and other ventures.
Is Abby Lee Miller in Jail?
If the rumours making the rounds are anything to go by then Abby Lee Miller is no longer in the federal prison in California where she has been incarcerated since May 2017. Late in 2010, the dance instructor filed for bankruptcy, owing over $400,000 in taxes. Fast forward to October 2015, Miller was indicted for fraud relating to her previous bankruptcy. She was charged with creating a secret bank account which she used to hide the proceeds from some masterclasses, TV deals, and merchandise sales.
As a result, Miller was indicted with bankruptcy fraud, concealment of bankruptcy assets and false bankruptcy declarations. She supposedly managed to hide some $755,000 from the authorities. Thus, to avoid the harsh punishment her offense would have attracted, Miller entered a guilty plea in June 2016 after pleading not guilty in November the previous year.
Eventually, the verdict came in May 2017 and she was handed over a sentence of one year and a day in prison after which two years of supervised release will follow. Her prison term began on July 12, 2017, at the Victorville Federal Correctional Institution in Victorville, California.
However, in January 2018, the rumour mill started buzzing on her case again but this time, it’s about her early release. According to , the Dance Moms star will walk free from the federal prison on February 20, 2018. The early release was motivated by her good behaviour while serving her prison term.
