Biography

Born Kate Esther Calvert on December 22, 1985, Tempest grew up as one of five children in South East London. From the age of 14 to 18, she worked in a record shop, joining the Thomas Tallis School, before leaving at the age of 16 to study at the BRIT School Performing Arts and Technology. She later went on to graduate in English Literature, from Goldsmiths, University of London.

Performing for the first time at open mic nights at a small hip-hop store in Carnaby Street in London’s West End known as Deal Real, when she was 16.

After that, she subsequently went on to support acts like John Cooper Clarke, Benjamin Zephaniah and Billy Bragg. Her band, Sound of Rum, had an international tour, but it got disbanded in 2012. Shortly after that, Tempest was commissioned to write her first play, titled ‘Wasted’.

The following year, Tempest released her first poetry book, titled ‘Everything Speaks in its Own Way’. It happened to be a limited edition run on her personal imprint, Zingaro. When she turned 26, she launched another work she titled ‘Brand New Ancients’, a theatrical spoken word piece at the Battersea Arts Centre. This move earned her wonderful critical acclaim and put her on the spot after winning the Herald Angel and the Ted Hughes Prize.

 

In September 2013, her play Hopelessly Devoted premiered at Birmingham Rep Theatre, having been produced by Paines Plough.

In 2014, Tempest worked with Dan Carey on her album Everybody Down, which she released in the same year and for which she was nominated for the 2014 Mercury Prize.

Later that same year, in October precisely, Hold Your Own – her poetry collection – was published to a great commercial and critical success. At the same time, Tempest was named a Next Generation Poet.

In 2016, Bloomsbury published her first novel, The Bricks That Built The Houses. It became a Sunday Times Bestseller and later went on to win the Books Are My Bag Best Breakthrough Author Award.

Tempest Curated the 2017 Brighton Festival, as well as had her album ‘Let Them Eat Chaos’ (which she released in 2016) debuting at number 28 on the UK Albums Chart. The same album was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2017 and she was also nominated for the 2018 Brit Awards for the Best British Female Solo Performer.

Kate Tempest has been nominated for several awards and has won a good number of these.

Kate Tempest’s father, Nigel Calvert, was a laborer, who – during her childhood – went through night-school while keeping his job as a laborer and taking care of a family of five children, to become an entertainment lawyer when Tempest was eight years old. This fashioned in her, a work ethic that has pushed her to the success she enjoys today.

In 1996, Nigel Calvert went on to establish Calvert Solicitors LLP, an entertainment law firm representing many stars and celebrities in several high-profile cases.
