Many best know him as Christian Grey, the lead character in the film adaptation of the E. L James erotic trilogy, Fifty Shades which had all and sundry talking thanks to its depiction of the controversial BDSM (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and submission and Sadism and Masochism) erotic practices.

Before his big break as Christian Grey, (ironically he has only earned Worst Actor nominations for the role) Jamie Dornan was already known to TV show lovers in Britain for his role in BBC Two’s The Fall, while American audiences also saw a bit of him in ABC’s Once Upon a Time (2011–2013) where he portrayed Sheriff Graham Humbert.

James Dornan was born on 1 May 1982 Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland to Professor Jim Dornan and Lorna Dornan. Dornan’s comes from a family of entertainers – his father Jim before becoming a professor of obstetrics and gynecology aspired to become an actor. His two older sisters Liesa and Jessica are also somewhat involved in entertainment. While Liesa works for Disney in London, Jessica is excelling in Falmouth, England as a fashion designer.

Raised in the suburbs of Belfast, Dornan attended Methodist College Belfast where he was part of the drama department and also played rugby. Tragedy struck the Dornans in 1998 when the matriarch of the family, Lorna lost her life to pancreatic cancer.

After secondary school, Jamie attended Middlebrough’s Teesside University but dropped out in 2003 to pursue a carer in entertainment starting out as a model.

 

Jamie’s modeling career was quite successful as he scored commercial gigs with Dior Homme and Calvin Klein which led to him being named by the New York Times as “The Golden Torso.” As a model, Dornan also worked for Hugo Boss, Armani, and Abercrombie & Fitch.

He began his acting career in 2006 during when he was also part of a folk band called Sons of Jim which would later disband in 2008. Jamie’s first acting role came in Marie Antoinette (2006). In his next film Beyond the Rave (2008), Jamie played the lead. He had three films released in the following year including Shadows in the Sun and two shorts; X Returns and Nice to Meet You.

He made his small screen debut portraying Sheriff Graham Humbert in Once Upon a Time for 9 episodes before joining The Fall as Paul Spector in 2013, a role that earned him his first ever award – Broadcasting Press Guild Breakthrough Award.

However, his most recognized breakthrough came when he was chosen to replace  Charlie Hunnam for the role of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades. Post Fifty Shades, Jamie Dornan continues to score acting gigs including Untogether and Robin Hood.

Jamie Dornan’s net worth has been estimated to the tune of $3 million and above. For his Christain Grey role in the first installment of the Fifty Shades series, Dornan earned a minimum salary of $250,000.

Additionally, he struck a deal to get an unrevealed percentage of the film’s total gross. And considering that the three films grossed a combined $1.089 billion from a meager budget of $150 million, Dornan did go home with quite a hefty paycheck. His net worth of $3 million is certain to rise should he keep scoring films that match the box office success of Fifty Shades.
