Every successful entrepreneur will tell you that the key to building a viable business is finding a need in society and then setting a process in motion to meeting that need. But the interesting thing about modern day society is that the needs to be met have become very diverse. Its beyond food, shelter, cars and some other obvious needs. In some cases, it’s the need to view violent and intense physical sport. Dana White has built a multi-billion dollar empire satisfying that need.

In the 90’s, Dana White relocated to Las Vegas in an effort to hit it big. On getting to Vegas, he began exploring every angle of the boxing world, from boxing himself to training and managing other fighters, refereeing and running gyms.
As providence would have it, at a friend’s wedding, he hooked up with an old school friend Lorenzo Fertitta who was quickly making a name for himself running the Vegas casinos he co-owned with his brother Frank. White and the Fertittas quickly bonded and reminisced about their love for boxing.
The perfect opportunity showed up when White learned that Semaphore Entertainment Group, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), was looking for a buyer for the UFC. Lorenzo Fertitta and his brother Frank were convinced by Dana White to buy the struggling venture for $2 million. They let White serve as President of the newly found parent company of the UFC, Zuffa, LLC. He owned 9% stake in the holding Company Zuffa, LLC.
The new business was not a bed of roses at the beginning as UFC struggled to be profitable. As reported in 2004, the UFC had faced losses of close to $35 million since the Ferttitas bought it over. Lorenzo, Frank and White embarked on a campaign, lobbying different athletic jurisdictions to legalize the sport.
Whilst still struggling, they decided that an increased television presence would help the business turn a corner. It proved to be a masterstroke. The Ultimate Fighter was created and Zuffa paid Spike TV $10 million for airtime. The show was produced between September and October 2004 and aired in 2005.
It became a ratings success for Spike TV. The TV show helped the UFC gain a whole new level of popularity amongst the largely male-dominated audience on Spike TV. The new TV audience was the ultimate opportunity for Dana White to exude the brash and often arrogant personality that UFC fans have come to associate with him.
In July 2016 it was announced that the UFC has been sold to a group of investors led by WME-IMG. White, however, added that he would be continuing in his role as president. He ventured into big-time boxing by helping to promote the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor mega-fight partly because McGregor was a former fighter for UFC.
