It is not every day that we get to come across someone who has successfully transcended from being a beauty queen to holding a top government position and being an officer in the United States Navy Reserve. Morgan Ortagus is one who has been able to make this move as she has since 2019 served as the United States Department of State Spokesperson.
Ortagus assumed this position after having served in other capacities at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Treasury Department. In between these roles, she has appeared on Fox News as a national security contributor, a position which many believe she used to audition for her State Department position as a few others have been appointed to roles in the Trump Administration after having shared their opinions of the network.
Early Life and Education of Morgan Ortagus
Morgan Ortagus was welcomed to the world on the 10th of July 1982 in Auburndale, Florida. She was born to parents Denise C. and Ronald E. Ortagus. Her mother made a living as an office manager while her father owned a cleanup and restoration company.
As an only child, Ortagus spent the better part of her life in Florida where she contested in beauty pageants such as the Miss Orange Blossom pageantry, the Miss Teen Auburndale Pageants, the Miss Auburndale pageantry, and the Miss Florida Citrus Pageants which she won. More so, she placed 3rd in the Miss Florida Beauty Pageant for which she won a college scholarship worth $3,000.
Morgan Ortagus proceeded to Florida Southern College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 2005. In 2013, she acquired a dual Master degree from Johns Hopkins University; an MBA from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and an MA in Government.
Facts About Her Career and Government Appointments Over the Years
Since 2006, Morgan Ortagus has served in various capacities both in government and in the private sector. A year after graduating from college, former Deputy National Security Advisor, K. T. McFarland, hired Ortagus as her Press Secretary as she vied for a senatorial seat. Before that, the young lady had worked as a staffer on the campaign of Florida Republican congressman, Adam Putnam.
In 2007, Ortagus undertook her first government assignment working as a public affairs officer at the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID). Her work required her to spend some time in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. The following year, she took up a role as an Intelligence Analyst at the United States Treasury under the Office of Intelligence and Analysis. She held that position from 2008 to 2010.
Morgan Ortagus went on to serve in the Obama Administration as Deputy Treasury Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. According to her, her work involved the blockage of illicit financial flows.
Following the end of her assignment in Riyadh, Ortagus moved to the private sector. She found work as a Global Relationship Manager for Standard Chartered Bank (as part of the bank’s Public Sector Team). Her work involved overseeing affairs relating to the bank’s customers in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
In 2016, Ortagus took up the position of executive director at Ernst & Young (EY). She later went on to become a national security contributor and Republican strategist at the Fox News Channel, appearing in programs such as Outnumbered, Fox & Friends, The Five and Mornings with Maria on the Fox Business Network, The Greg Gutfeld Show, and Lou Dobbs Tonight.
Details of Her Marital Life
Morgan Ortagus has been married to Jonathan Ross Weinberger since May 11, 2013. Their wedding was first conducted in a court of law after which a Jewish ceremony was organized to celebrate their union. While it is not certain how they met, sources believe that the couple met in the line of duty as Weinberger has held a number of government positions. He initially served as an executive secretary at the United States Treasury Department from 2003 to 2008 before becoming White House associate general counsel and executive secretary on Trade from 2008 to 2012.
Prior to her marriage to Weinberger, Ortagus was once married to Joshua Dobbs, a U.S. Marine Officer. Ortagus and Dobbs hooked up in Polk County, Florida, where she grew up. Although not much is known about their relationship, what is no secret is the fact that the marriage did not turn out as she imagined as the two had to call it quits.
