Ben Platt’s Early Life & Education
The actor was born Benjamin “Ben” Schiff Platt in Los Angeles, California, on the 24th of September 1993. He is the fourth out of five children born to Julie and Marc Platt. His dad is a theatre, film, and TV producer, whose credits include Wicked – a Broadway musical based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West.
Ben attended Adderley School for Performing Arts in Pacific Palisades, then the Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, where he graduated from in 2011. After his graduation, he attended Columbia University in New York, where he became a member of the campus acapella musical group called Nonsequitur. He, however, dropped out after 6 weeks to keep up with his contract with The Book of Mormon.
His Acting Career and How He Became Famous
Platt had always been interested in arts since he was a child and as such, he started performing on stage at an early age. At the age of nine, he played Winthrop Paroo in the musical The Music Man at the Hollywood Bowl. At the age of eleven, he joined the national tour of Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner’s Caroline, or Change. By seventeen, he appeared as Jean Valjean in Kidz Theater’s production of Les Misérables.
Some of his other stage credits include Into the Woods, Bye Bye Birdie, Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, and Alice in Wonderland. In 2012, he played Elder Arnold Cunningham in the critically acclaimed musical comedy, The Book of Mormon. The play first premiered on the 19th of December 2012 at the Bank of America Theatre and closed on the 6th of October 2013. It was well received and unsurprisingly, Ben Platt’s performance was lauded by critics. He would later reprise his role as Elder Cunningham on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre from 2014 to 2015.
Also in 2012, the actor played a supporting role as Benji Applebaum in Pitch Perfect. The movie was a huge success and earned him a Teen Choice Awards nomination in the Choice Movie: Male Scene Stealer category. He reprised the role in the sequel – Pitch Perfect 2 and has since made appearances in other movies, including Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, Drunk Parents, and Ricki and the Flash, among others.
In 2015, he played Evan Hansen in the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen. Platt’s performance earned him numerous accolades and awards, including the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Apart from acting, Ben Platt is also a singer. In 2017, Platt signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and in March 2019, he released his debut studio album, Sing To Me Instead.
