If you still believe that talk is cheap then you’ve probably not heard Howard Stern speak. The millionaire American radio host owes his celebrity status and vast fortune mainly to his job on the mic. Stern is also an actor, producer, TV personality and author. His 1993 autobiography Private Parts topped The New York Times Best-Seller list for 20 consecutive weeks. Stern first gained national popularity through his self-named nationally syndicated radio show The Howard Stern Show which had a long stint between 1986 and 2005. The self-proclaimed “King of the Media” is known for being brutally honest and ever ready to take on very controversial issues.
While this earned him a wider audience and more fans, it resulted in friction between him and the management of the radio stations he’s worked at. Today, we zoom our focus on the Howard Stern behind the camera – the husband and the father.
Who is Howard Stern?
The billionaire radio host was born—Howard Allen Stern—on January 12, 1954, in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City; to Jewish parents Ben and Ray Stern. His father, Ben Stern, is a war veteran who later took up a job at a Manhattan radio station as a recording engineer. Ben Stern was also co-owner of Aura Recording Inc., a cartoons and adverts production studio in Manhattan. His mother, Ray Stern, was an office clerk in their home city of New York. At some point, however, she became a full-time housewife and much later, she took up a job as a respiratory therapist. As the younger of two children, Stern moved to Roosevelt with his family in 1955. There, he attended Washington-Rose Elementary School before he went to Roosevelt Junior-Senior High. As a young Jew, Stern also attended Hebrew school and was given the Hebrew name Tzvi.
His family moved to Rockville Centre, NY in 1969, making him transfer to South Side High School where he eventually completed his high school education in 1972. Upon graduation from high school, he pursued a degree in communications at Boston University where he volunteered as a radio host, news anchor and DJ at the college radio station WTBU. Stern then obtained a diploma at the Radio Engineering Institute of Electronics in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1975 which earned him a 1st-class radiotelephone operator license. Armed with a radio license, he secured his first job at WNTN in Newton, Massachusetts.
Brief Career History
Before his eponymous The Howard Stern Show on WXRK, Stern earned a cult following as a radio personality while working at several radio stations including morning shows at WRNW in New York, WCCC in Connecticut, WWWW in Detroit, WWDC in Washington, D.C. While at WXRK, Stern also worked afternoons at WNBC in New York City until he was dismissed in 1985. At the peak of his 20-year stint on WXRK, his morning show had an audience of over 20 million listeners. Stern is a recipient of several awards including Billboard’s Nationally Syndicated Air Personality award which he won for eight consecutive years. He was also announced as a judge on the 7th season of America’s Got Talent, replacing Piers Morgan and he served in that capacity until the 10th season of the show. The show had to be moved to New York City to accommodate Stern’s work schedule.
Who is Howard Stern Married To?
Howard Stern has been married to the former model, actress and TV host, Beth Stern (née Ostrosky) since 2008. The couple began dating way back in 2000. After seven years together, Stern announced their engagement on his radio show on Valentine’s day of 2007. They tied the knot a year later on October 3, 2008, at Le Cirque restaurant in New York City. So far as we know, Beth Ostrosky is an animal lover as she houses about 15 cats in her foster homes. She is also an animal rights activist.
Although this is Ostrosky’s first marriage, the same can’t be said for Stern. The radio host was married to psychoanalyst Alison Berns back in 1978. The two had met during their college days through a mutual friend. In 2001, however, their twenty-three-year-old union was dissolved amicably. The reasons for the split is still unknown. However, sources believe that Stern’s workaholic lifestyle and Berns desire to go back to work must have been the trigger. Together, they had three daughters, Emily, Debra and Ashley.
What We Know About Howard Stern’s Daughters
Howard Stern has three daughters from his first marriage to Alison Berns: Emily Beth, Debra Jennifer, and Ashley Jade. His first daughter, Emily Beth Stern, was born on May 7, 1983. She attended the prestigious New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She is an actress, poet, and casting director. From her early life, Emily has not been in a perfect relationship with her father. It began when she decided to practice Judaism against the wish of her parents. Then came his shocking divorce from her mother. And just as she was wrapping her head around that, Stern marries a model. The second marriage sparked family tensions especially for the daughters who, at the time, still believed their parents could get back together. Nevertheless, Howard Stern has maintained that he has a cordial relationship with his daughters.
His second daughter, Debra Jennifer, was born on May 9, 1986. She got married to Collin Christy in 2016. The youngest of the three, Ashley Jade, was born on January 24, 1993, in Old Westbury, Long Island, New York. So far the Stern girls are anything but close to their step-mother. They have never been spotted together at any public events or appeared on the same camera-shot.
