Ruben Neves’ Bio, Age
Ruben Diogo da Silva Neves (born 13 March 1997) is a Portuguese professional footballer who currently plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League and for the Portugal national team.
Ruben Neves’ Career
Neves grew up in the Aveiro District’s Mozelos (Santa Maria da Feira) and joined FC Porto’s youth system at the age of eight. He also spent a season on loan at Padroense, which served as the academy’s under-16 squad; reserve team boss Luis Castro praised him as a player with “great mental qualities, to go along with technical and tactical skills” during his time with the academy.
Neves was supposed to skip Porto’s under-19 team and play with the reserves instead for the 2014–15 season. Following the injury of teammate Mikel Agu, Julen Lopetegui summoned him up to join the main squad’s pre-season practices. He made his Primeira Liga debut on August 15, 2014, at the age of 17 years and five months, starting and scoring in a 2–0 home win against Maritimo, becoming the club’s youngest player to score in the competition. He made his UEFA Champions League debut five days later in a 1–0 win over Lille, breaking another record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo by becoming the tournament’s youngest Portuguese player.
Neves injured his right knee in a Champions League group stage match against Shakhtar Donetsk on December 10, 2014, after colliding with Alex Teixeira in midfield. The club stated at the conclusion of the game that he had a sprain with an apparent injury to the internal lateral ligament. He returned to the pitch in a 3–1 home triumph over Unio da Madeira in the Taça da Liga after nearly a month on the sidelines. Following his injury, Casemiro took his place in midfield, and he spent the rest of the season trailing behind the Brazilian in the pecking order.
On October 20, 2015, at the age of 18 years and 221 days, Neves broke the record for the youngest player to start as captain in the Champions League, guiding Porto to a 2–0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the group stage, surpassing Rafael van der Vaart, who had held the record since September 16, 2003. In a 2–1 win over Paços de Ferreira at the Estádio do Drago on December 5, he set a new club record by becoming the club’s youngest player to make 50 appearances, surpassing Fernando Gomes and Jaime Magalhaes.
Neves joined Wolverhampton Wanderers of the EFL Championship for an unknown sum, thought to be in the region of £15.8 million — a club and league record fee. He was reunited with former Porto boss Nuno Espirito Santo after joining. On August 15, he scored his first goal in a 3–2 away win over Hull City.
Neves was nominated for the EFL Championship Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards in April 2018, as well as being named to the EFL Championship Team of the Season alongside teammates Conor Coady and John Ruddy. His team was promoted as champions as a result of the player’s six goals in 42 appearances, all of which came from beyond the box. He walked away with a hat-trick of club awards at the end of the season, including Player of the Season, Player’s Player of the Season, and Goal of the Season. For his goal against Derby County at Molineux in April 2018, he was also named EFL Goal of the Year for 2018.
In July 2018, Wolves confirmed that Neves had signed a new deal that would keep him at the club until June 2023. He scored his first Premier League goal and assisted Ral Jiménez on his competitive debut in the first match of the new season, as his team recovered from behind twice to draw 2–2 against Everton. Along with compatriots Rui Patrcio, Joo Moutinho, Diogo Jota, and Hélder Costa, he helped the club set a new league record for the most Portuguese players named in a starting lineup.
Neves made his 50th appearance for Wolves on October 6, 2018, and honored the occasion by assisting on Matt Doherty’s winning goal in a 1–0 victory over Crystal Palace. His 55th-minute winning goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup at Molineux, “a venomous dipping strike from 31 yards (28 m) that beat Simon Mignolet at his near post,” was described as “a venomous dipping shot from 31 yards (28 m) that beat Simon Mignolet at his near post” the following January. Visitors on BBC Sport’s website voted the goal the best of the third round.
Neves was named Wolves’ club captain for the first time on September 25, 2019, when he led the squad in the absence of regular captain Conor Coady as Wolves advanced to the fourth round of the 2019–20 EFL Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory over Reading at Molineux in the third round.
On March 6, 2021, Neves made his 100th Premier League appearance in Wolves’ 0–0 away draw with Aston Villa.
In a 2–0 win away to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on February 13, 2022, Neves made his 200th competitive appearance for Wolves in all competitions.

Coach Rui Jorge called Neves to the under-21 team on August 29, 2014, when he was yet 17 years old. On October 14, he scored his first goal in a 5–4 home triumph over the Netherlands in the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off round.
When the finals began in the Czech Republic, Neves set a new record by being the tournament’s youngest player, aged 18 years and 3 months, when he played five minutes in a 1–0 win over England in the group stage opener. It was his sole appearance in the tournament, as Portugal advanced to the final, where they were defeated by Sweden in a penalty shoot-out.
Neves was first called up to the senior team on November 10, 2015, as an injury replacement for Joo Moutinho ahead of friendlies against Russia and Luxembourg. He made his debut in the first encounter, playing 17 minutes in a 1–0 loss in Krasnodar, before going on to play the entire 2–0 win against the latter at the Stade Josy Barthel, sharing the midfield with Porto teammates Danilo Pereira and André André. Neves was named to a preliminary 35-man roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup by manager Fernando Santos, however, he did not make the final 23-man squad.
Neves played in the 3–1 semi-final triumph over Switzerland in the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals on home soil but was replaced in the starting eleven for the final against the Netherlands by the more defensive Danilo.
