Mark Flekken (born 13 June 1993) is a goalkeeper for Bundesliga club SC Freiburg and the Netherlands national team. He was born in the Netherlands.

Flekken was born in the Dutch town of Bucholtz, near the German border. He comes from a football family: both his parents, René and Annie, were goalkeepers, and his younger brother Roy was also a goalkeeper.

Mark Flekken’s Career

Flekken began his career in the youth department of RKVV WDZ in Bocholtz before heading to Roda JC Kerkrade’s youth academy.

In 2009, he transferred across the border to Alemannia Aachen’s young squads, which were then in the 2. Bundesliga. Flekken signed his first professional deal on September 22, 2011.

During the 2012–13 3. Liga season’s winter break, coach René van Eck named Flekken as the starting goalkeeper after the financially distressed club broke ways with Michael Melka.

Flekken made his debut against 1. FC Saarbrücken on January 26, 2013, in a 2–0 home win. Flekken transferred to the 2. Bundesliga team SpVgg Greuther Fürth before of the 2013–14 season.

In three years as a backup goalkeeper behind Wolfgang Hesl and Sebastian Mielitz, he only made three league games.

On June 12, 2016, Flekken joined MSV Duisburg. He scored a goal after a corner in a 1–1 draw against VfL Osnabrück on August 7, 2016, when he got to the opposing box in the final minute.

Flekken gave up an odd goal in a 2. Bundesliga match against FC Ingolstadt in February 2018, when he turned away from the action to drink from his water bottle.

Flekken will join SC Freiburg for the 2018–19 season, which was announced on May 14, 2018. Throughout the season, he served as a backup to Alexander Schwolow, but he was given the opportunity to make his debut against 1. FC Nürnberg on the final matchday of the 2018–19 season.

He was named the new starter after Schwolow left before the start of the 2020–21 season, but he sustained a serious elbow injury while warming up for the DFB-Pokal match against SV Waldhof Mannheim, and he was forced to sit out the entire season.

In the meantime, he was replaced in goal by Florian Müller, a Mainz 05 loanee. He was reintroduced as the starting goalkeeper on May 9, 2021, after regaining match practice with the Freiburg reserves in the Regionalliga Südwest.

Flekken began the 2021–22 season as the uncontested first-choice goalkeeper, and the squad finished third in the league after 10 games without defeat, with Flekken contributing the league’s highest rate of shots stopped.

Flekken has been called up to the senior Netherlands national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Montenegro and Norway, which will take place on November 13 and 16, 2021, respectively.

On March 26, 2022, Flekken made his international debut for the Netherlands as a starter in a friendly match against Denmark.
