Amanda Burden’s Biography (Age)
The dignified city planner was christened Amanda Jay Mortimer upon her birth on 18th January 1944. She attended Westover School for her high school education and Wellesley College. Afterward, she decided to further her education at Sarah Lawrence College where she bagged a degree in environmental science. In 1976, Amanda Burden obtained a Masters degree in Urban Planning from Columbia University. She wrote her thesis on Solid Waste Management and won an award for it. The thesis was considered a university asset and is still studied to date.
She began her profession in an architectural firm called Gruzen and Partners and rose to the position of the Vice President for planning and design in 1983. Being saddled with the responsibility of implementing and developing design plans for projects, Amanda’s targets were mainly on the Battery Park City Authority. In 1990, she accepted to serve as a member of the New York City Planning Commission and in 2002, she began serving as its commissioner up till 2013. As a civil servant in the New York City Planning Commission, she coordinated many projects that were aimed at improving the lives of the people.
Amanda Burden also spearheaded the rezoning of 40% of the city, anchored the development of the Brooklyn Waterfront, and oversaw the creation of the High Line Park and East River Esplanade. These achievements and more earned her several awards and recognitions which include the 2004 Smithsonian Museum Design Patron Award and the 2009 JC Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development. She is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Amanda Burden is the daughter of former U.S socialite and fashion icon Babe Paley and Stanley Grafton Mortimer Jr. She is a descendant of John Jay, The first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in America. Her other grandfather, Dr. Harvey Cushing was the ‘Father of American Neurosurgery’ and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.
With a father who was an heir to the Standard Oil Fortune and a celebrity mother Amanda and her brother; Stanley Grafton Mortimer III didn’t lack much growing up. However, her parents would later divorce and their remarriages earned her seven extra siblings who are William Cushing Paley, Kate Cushing Paley, Averell Mortimer, Jay Mortimer, David Mortimer, Hillary Paley Califano, and Jeffrey Paley.
She has been married twice and considered a third go with Charlie Rose before their breakup in 2006. Her first marriage was to Shirley Carter Burden Jr. Their union lasted from 1964 to 1972 and produced two sons, Flobelle Fairbanks Burden and S. Carter Burden III (founder of Logicworks). In 1979, Amanda Burden found love again in the arms of Steven J. Ross (head of Warner Communication). They were married until 1981.
In 1993, she began dating TV personality whom she considered settling down with until their break up in 2006.
