It is no easy task transforming oneself from an obese and timid young man to a fitness instructor that is sought for nationwide. As a fitness instructor, author and actor, Tony Horton has made a name for himself as one of America’s premier wellness and fitness experts.
Tony Horton’s Bio, Age
Tony Horton was born on July 2, 1958, in Westerly, a small town in Rhode Island, U.S. His birth name was Anthony Sawyer Horton Jr. and he was one of three children born to his parents, Jean Horton and Anthony Sawyer Horton. His two siblings were both girls. His father, Anthony Sr. was a part of the US Army where he served three years as a 1st Lieutenant. His years of service meant his been stationed at various bases across the country. This entailed that his family moved around a lot and by the time Anthony Jr. was 10 years old, the Horton’s had moved more than five times already. Anthony Jr. and his sisters were mostly raised in Trumbull, Connecticut. His dad being a member of the Armed Forces was fit but not necessarily obsessed. He was a minor league baseball player as well as being a golfer and yachter.
Tony was not one cut out for fitness from an early age as he has described himself as a “98-pound weakling” with a speech impediment. So how did he turn it all around? While he was attending the University of Rhode Island, Tony Horton took an interest in getting fit and was drawn to weightlifting. After graduation, he took a road trip and soon ended up in California where he decided to take up an on-screen career. Whilst he worked himself to shape, Horton met an executive at 20th Century Fox and he became his personal trainer, working out of his garage with each lesson billed at $20.
While in California, he joined the World Gym located in Venice, California. The gym also boasted of memberships of the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was here that Tony began taking notes as he watched others workout. Soon after his gig with the executive, his clientele began to grow and soon it included the likes of Tom Petty, Annie Lennox, Billy Idol, amongst others.
Horton had his sights clearly set on where he aspired to be. The thrust of his training and fitness sessions were themed to focus on balance, speed, and flexibility and combined a range of training schemes from circuit, cross and interval training, advanced stretching, weight and resistance training, cardiovascular/aerobic training, kickboxing, and yoga. All of which would lay the groundwork for his famous fitness program P90X and its sequels.
On his way to becoming a household name in body fitness, Horton was first a fitness trainer to stars of the entertainment industry and beyond. Horton first linked up with musician Tom Petty, who followed Horton’s system and was soon in incredible shape. Tony was soon having calls from various stars and soon enough he established ASH Fitness in Santa Monica.

Two years later, when Beach Body was founded in 1998, Tony was brought on to impart his knowledge. His first Beach Body product was Great Body Guaranteed, then it was followed by a host of other products including the renowned P90X.

Horton married his longtime girlfriend, Shawna Brannon in 2015. The pair can be seen in many of his videos going through the sessions.

There have been articles that implied that Tony’s various fitness program may be gay inclined and so rumors abound concerning Horton’s sexuality. However, seeing that he is married to Shawna, it is safe to say he is not gay except he comes open in the future.

Tony Horton created the in-home program Power 90 in 2001. His most famous work, P90X or Power 90 Extreme was created in 2004. Being his most famous work, it sold as many as four million copies in six years. Between 2011 and 2013, he released P90X2 and P90X3. Aside from the fitness programs, Horton has several books to his name including “Bring It”, Crush It.” He is estimated to be worth as much as $20 million and resides in California.
