He hoped to become a fighter pilot with the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) but ended up with multiple talents, above all, he became a preacher of the Islamic gospel and died doing so. During his lifetime, the multi-talented icon Junaid Jamshed was known as one of the highly influential Muslims in the world. Back home, he was famous as his country’s biggest brand ambassador.
Junaid Jamshed’s Biography
Born to a retired colonel in the PAF, Junaid’s full name is Khan Junaid Jamshed. He was born on the 3rd day of September 1964 and he has three siblings – Omar Jamshed, Humayun Jamshed, and Muneeza Jamshed. Together, they were raised in Karachi, Sindh in Pakistan. His mother’s name is Nafeesa Akbar while his father is known as Jamshed Akbar.
Jamshed attended International Boarding High School, Yanbu, Saudi Arabia after which he aimed at becoming a pilot for the Pakistan Air Force. He, however, couldn’t make it due to his poor eyesight. He then went back to school and became a University graduate with his BA in mechanical engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore.
Junaid Jamshed began his singing career while he was still studying at the university. He joined the rock band Nuts and Bolts and was its lead singer, later, he joined Vital Signs and became its lead vocalist. Other members of the Vital Signs rock band include keyboardist Rohail Hyatt and bassist Shahzad Hasan.
The Vital Signs had four albums released during their time together, first of which was Vital Sign 1. which was a huge success after selling beyond expectations. The album includes hit songs like Tum Mil Gaye and Dil Dil Pakistan.
Even after the unexpected success, the band’s first album accumulated, Jamshed still wasn’t determined to become a musician, instead, he maintained his dream of becoming a pilot for his country’s air force. It took a lot of effort from his bandmates to convince him to continue doing music.
Vital Signs released its second album titled Vital Signs 2 and although it was not as successful as the first, it paved way for the band’s first tour in the US.
In 1993, the band released its third album, Aitebar. It was in the same year that Jamshed had his first contract as an actor signed. It also happened to be his only acting contract with Dhundle Raste.
In 1994, he decided to mix a solo career with being a member of the Vital Signs band. He released his first solo album in that same year and titled it Junaid of Vital Signs.
In 1995, the band released Hum Tum, its fourth and final album. The band struggled to continue together but could not as issues began to arise among members which eventually led to them parting ways.
After the Vital Signs disbanded, Jamshed focused on becoming a solo artist and in 1998, he released his second solo album titled Us Rah Par. In addition to making him more popular, the album added to his earnings as it was rated as one of the best-selling albums the year.
In subsequent years, Jamshed released his third and fourth album. The Best of Junaid Jamshed, the third album, was released in 2000 while his last solo album, Dil Ki Baat was released in 2001.
In 2001, Junaid Jamshed began drifting away from music slowly and he started avoiding media attention. His scarce presence in the music scene caused his fourth album to flop in the market. Speculations of Junaid’s return to work as an engineer began to spread but sometime later, he spoke of launching a fashion designing company. The decision to distance himself from music was largely influenced by the 9/11 attack, after his tour in the United States failed heavily due to tension generating in the west regarding the attack. In 2004, he finally put an end to his music career, making it official that he was dedicating his life to Islam fulltime.
Junaid Jamshed: Cause of Death
December 7, 2016, is a day not to be forgotten in a hurry, the day a philanthropist and international icon passed away. Junaid Jamshed and his second wife Nahya were on board PIA flight 661 en route to Islamabad when the plane crashed at about 4:15 PST close to Abbottabad, 56 miles (90km) away from its destination. Jamshed, along with his second wife Nahya Junaid, was amongst other 45 passengers and crew members who died as a result of the crash, leaving no survivor.
The flight which took-off from Chitral airport at 3:30 PST was scheduled to arrive at Benazir Bhutto international airport, Islamabad by 4:40 PST. All five crew members on board were Pakistani, among other 39 Pakistani passengers, an Austrian, a Chinese and a South Korean were victims of the mishap. In total, on board were 47 people.
Family, Wife, Kids
While he was still alive, Jamshed married two wives, Ayesha Junaid and Nahya Junaid and had four kids – three sons and a daughter.
His second wife Nahya Junaid used to be an employee of the Pakistan football Federation before she got married.
Jamshed is remembered as a man who loved and cared for his family. He is survived by his first wife Ayesha Junaid, four kids and three siblings.
