Ever since his time as a vocalist for the hard rock band Montrose in the 1970s, Sammy Hagar’s name has been praised as one of the greats in the rock music genre. Following his time with Montrose, he has spent his time making music as a solo artist and a member of a myriad of rock bands. One of his most popular songs as a solo act was 1984’s I Can’t Drive 55.

Hagar was born and raised in California. He came into the world on October 13, 1947, in Salinas, California. His family soon relocated to Fontana due to his father’s employment at the Kaiser Steel Mill.
While schooling at Fontana High School, Sammy fronted his first band the Fabulous Castilles at the age of fourteen. This ushered in a time in his life where he was involved with many bands including Samson & Hagar, Johhny Fortune Band, and the Justice Brothers.
In 1973, Sammy Hagar became a part of Montrose where he penned his first lyrics. He recorded two albums with the group before he quit after falling out with Ronnie Montrose, the group’s founder. Their 1973 self-titled debut album Montrose was Sammy’s first RIAA certified effort, as it was given platinum status.
Sammy’s solo career started in 1976 and has been on and off, existing between his time with various bands. As at 2014, the hard rock musician has dropped 13 solo projects, with nine of them coming in the 70s and 80s. Two of those albums, Standing Hampton (1981) and VOA (1984) have been certified platinum by the RIAA.
The 1981 album was his first release under Geffen Records after he walked away from Capitol Records. The project is his biggest-selling album to date thanks to tracks such as “There’s Only One Way to Rock”.
Moving on from the 80s, Hagar has been a part of many groups including Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve (1984), Van Halen (1986, 1988 – 1995), Sammy Hagar & The Waboritas (1999 – 2006), Chicken Foot (2009 – 2011), and The Circle (2014).
As at 2015, Sammy Hagar’s solo and group musical efforts have seen the release of 26 albums going gold, platinum, 3X platinum, 4X platinum or 6X platinum.
Sammy Hagar has been in the world of business since the 1990s. In those early business days, he bought a mountain bike store and built another. Soon his was the top rated independent bike store in the state of California. Since the 1990s he has been building a portfolio of nightclubs and restaurants.
He is also the owner of the Cabo Wabo Tequila brand and the Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum. He sold an 80 percent stake in the business to Gruppo Campari for $80 million and sold the rest for $11 million in 2010.
The musician’s non-music efforts include appearances in commercials such as National Automotive Parts Association’s 2007 commercials. In these commercials, he worked with Nextel Cup drivers Dale Jarrett and Michael Waltrip. He also had a guest appearance on an episode of the CBS police drama Nash Bridges, where he played the role of a bartender in a gay bar. In 2016, he appeared on NBC’s The Voice as a guest mentor to the contestants under the tutelage of judge .
Sammy Hagar published his autobiography in March 2011 titled Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock. It became a No.1 New York Times Bestseller. He released a cookbook titled Are We Having Any Fun Yet? – The Cooking & Partying Handbook in September 2015.
