Born in Miami, Florida on the 19th of June 1990, Xavier Rhodes was singularly raised by his mother whose name is given as Kim Shack. He did his high school at the Miami Norland High School which is situated in Miami Gardens, Florida. As a child, Xavier Rhodes had loved wrestling and said in an interview that there were times he and his mother would wrestle in the house. They would go into the room, throw pillows on the floor and start wrestling. They both watched every pro wrestling show that was on the television. The athlete said he was very aggressive as a child and he funneled all that aggression into football.
Rhodes grew up without a father’s guidance which made his childhood a difficult one because his mother and grandmother had to do other things and so much attention was not given to him. He met his father, Daryl, for the first time at age 18. Xavier didn’t bother to ask him why he was absent all the past years of his life because according to the athlete, he knew there were two sides to the story and if he tries to find out from both parties, he will never know the truth. The athlete is focused on being a good father to his children and a loving husband to his wife saying he does not want his children to experience the same thing he did while growing up.
He started playing football as early as age 11 and according to the athlete in an interview, he was an angry player and excelled quickly in football. In high school, he was a two-sport star as he played football with the Miami Norland Vikings football team and was also involved in track and field events. Rhodes while playing for the Vikings, played as a wide receiver, running back, and defensive back. In his senior year in school, he led his school in both rushing and receiving yards.
Xavier Rhodes received an athletic scholarship to attend and play college football at Florida State University. Though he had other scholarship offers like those from West Virginia University, Auburn University, and Florida International University, he chose Florida State University over all of them. He played for coach Jimbo Fisher’s Florida State Seminoles football team from 2009 to 2012 and majored in social sciences.
Career
Rhodes was outstanding in track and field events and played in the 12th Annual Nike South Florida All-Star Game. He was drafted by the Vikings in the first round, 25th overall of the 2013 NFL Draft and was listed as No. 75 wide receiver and No. 19 prospect in the state of Florida. Rhodes signed a four-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings on July 13, 2013, worth $7.80 million which includes $6.33 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $4.05 million.
He made his professional debut and his first career start in a regular season at Minnesota Vikings season opener at the Detroit Lions, and there he recorded three solo tackles in their 34-24 loss. He made his first ever career tackle on a wide receiver, after a seven-yard reception in the second quarter.
He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2016 for the first time in his football career. The next year, on the 30th of July 2017, the Minnesota Vikings signed Xavier Rhodes to a five years contract extension worth $70.10 million that includes $32.80 million guaranteed and a $12 million signing bonus.
