From the sadness of being undrafted in 2017 to winning the Super Bowl LII the same season with a side that took a chance to sign him as an undrafted free agent was quite an emotional leap for the Philly running back Corey Clement.
Clement’s contributions to the Super Bowl LII game against the New England Patriots was a significant one. He finished with 8 rushing yards on 3 carries and 100 receiving yards on 4 receptions and 1 touchdown as the Philadelphia Eagles won the title beating NEP 41–33. It was a first-time win for both the Eagles and Clement and the rookie couldn’t have wished to start his career on a stronger foot.
Corey Clement Bio
Born on November 2, 1994, Corey Joel Clement hails from Glassboro, New Jersey. His career began in Glassboro High School where in addition to playing football, he also participated in track & field. His best 100-m time of 11.76 seconds came in his senior year. Clement finished with a South Jersey record of 6,245 career rushing yards. He had a total of 90 touchdowns and Rivals.com rated him as a 4-star athlete.
Clement joined the University of Wisconsin after previously choosing the University of Pittsburgh. For his freshman and sophomore year, Clement played as back-up to Melvin Gordon. In his junior season, Clement was set-up to become the feature running back after Gordon’s departure, however, a groin injury which required surgery to fix availed him with only little playing time.
Clement would come to prove his talent in his senior year which was by a large margin the best season of his collegiate career. He finished the season with 1,375 rushing yards. In total, Clement’s collegiate career stats include 3,092 rushing yards, 279 receiving yards, and 2 touchdowns. Clement’s senior year honors included; First Team All-Big Ten and Second Team All-Big Ten. In his sophomore season, he earned the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for week 10.
With such impressive stats, Corey Clement was positive that he would get drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft, however, he was frustrated when his name wasn’t called at the Ben Franklin Parkway during NFL Draft weekend. Corey never thought he’d be in a situation where he would have to consider a free agent signing, but unfortunately, it looked like his only chance of getting to play in the nation’s top football league.
On the brighter side, Corey would get a call from the Philadelphia Eagles to sign him as a free agent and the story took a turn to Corey’s favor from then on. Though he received just $25,000 of guaranteed money being an undrafted free agent, Corey got to drive the car of his dreams. His high school guidance counselor, Mary Beth Ragazzino who had promised him her BMW should he make it to the NFL kept her promise offering Corey the car he admired so much as a kid.
Ragazzino like many others has had nice things to say about Corey especially about his personality. Corey Clement ended his rookie season with 321 rushing yards and 6 total touchdowns.
His Parents
Corey’s parents are Latanya and Steve Clement. When Corey was signed by Philly, no one was more excited than his family as it meant that he would be closer to home and they won’t have to travel long to watch him play.
His mother Latanya came under the media radar in August 2017 when she took to the Facebook page of her alma mater, Little Flower Catholic High School to ask for prayers for Corey who was then about to start his first professional preseason.
Latanya’s prayer request had been for her son to remain injury free throughout the game. God sure answered their prayers as Corey remained fit all the way up to being selected to play in the Super Bowl LII. The girls at Little Flower couldn’t hide their excitement when it became apparent that Corey was going to play in the biggest NFL game.
In celebration, the school invited Corey’s mom who graduated with the class of ’83 to be their special guest in support of the Eagles. She proudly honored the invitation which was attended by Latanya’s own classmates back in the day. Latanya Clement during her years in Little Flower was an average track runner. She now works as a consultant for college-bound students. Corey is their youngest son, he named Stephen Clement.
