Sometimes, all it takes for a very talented person is to find a big stage that would catapult them into instant stardom. For James Arthur, that big stage was The X Factor. Created by Simon Cowell in 2004, The X Factor has been giving able artists the platform to showcase their talent for over a decade. After winning the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012 with his hit single Impossible, Arthur has gone on to release three studio albums. As of 2019,  the singer has embarked on more than five different tours since his X Factor win. Despite the controversies he has faced, James Arthur has grown to become a world sensation, making it to the Top 10 of popular music charts, and also winning several awards.

James Arthur’s Career and Studio Albums

Before he got his worldwide fame from being The X Factor’s ninth winner, James Arthur was an unsigned artist who wrote and recorded songs both solo and in bands. He has been a part of the Cleveland-based progressive band Moonlight Drive, Cleveland-based alternative rock band Cue The Drama, Middlesbrough alternative rock band Save Arcade, and the indie-pop and rock band, Emerald Skye. During this time of independence, he also created the musical project called The James Arthur Project, releasing two Eps under the project before he finally decided to audition for The X Factor.

Having judge Nicole Scherzinger as his mentor, James Arthur slowly advanced from the audition stage to the boot camp, and finally the live stage performances. Despite reaching the bottom two at the sixth live show, Arthur would go on to push forward and reach the finals. For the mentor duets theme, he sang Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love with Scherzinger before performing Barbadian singer Shontelle’s song Impossible for his winning performance.

Arthur’s cover of Impossible was released as a charity single after his X Factor victory. The song became the fastest-selling X Factor winner’s single at the time, with 255,000 downloads under 48 hours and over 490,000 by the end of the week. It also topped the UK Singles Chart in its first week. It is currently the best-selling winner’s single with 1.3 million copies in the UK, surpassing fifth X Factor winner Alexandra Burke’s cover of Hallelujah.

After the competition, James Arthur signed up with Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Music, releasing his debut album James Arthur on November 1, 2013. Despite the controversy over the use of homophobic words in his song, the album topped charts. Following more controversy over lyrics in his rap mixtape, James Arthur announced in June 2014 that he and Syco Music had mutually parted ways.

Arthur signed with Columbia Records and afterward, he announced that he is working on a new album. After the release (and chart performance) of the album’s lead single, Say You Won’t Let Go, Arthur returned to Syco records. He released his second album, Back from the Edge, under the label. By late November 2017, Arthur released the lead single Naked from his third album. He continued to release singles from the album with the seventh single being released on October 18, 2019. The same day, he released his third studio album, You.

Consisting of 37 concerts, the tour went through several countries, including the UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, and several other countries in Europe. The tour was a success, with some of the concerts sold out. In 2016, after parting ways with Syco Music, he embarked on The Story So Far Tour. Consisting of nine concerts, they were held in Scotland and England.

In 2017, he embarked on the Back from the Edge Tour to promote the album. The tour consisted of 36 shows, 16 concerts, 11 arena shows, and 9 worldwide concerts. Arthur served as the opening act for OneRepublic in most of their North American concerts but didn’t join the group when they began touring Asia.

The tour began in May 2019 and ended in September 2019. Following the release of his third studio album, Arthur announced the follow-up tour, You: Up Close and Personal Tour, to promote the album’s release. The tour consisted of 16 concerts and was held from October 6, 2019, to October 29. A Europe tour, The You Tour, is set to hold from January to February 2020.

With all that being said, James Arthur has made quite the name for himself. With his singles and album sales, as well as tours and ticket sales, the English singer has been able to amass an estimated net worth of $5 million for himself.
