Addison Russell is among the few MLB players who were drafted straight from high school. Addison Russell Bio (Age, Ethnicity, Other Background Information)

Addison was born on January 23, 1994, in Pensacola, Florida. At three months old, Addison almost lost his life to a respiratory tract infection known as the “human respiratory syncytial virus.” Russell has Filipina roots from his mother’s side. He is the eldest child of four children.

He played high school baseball at Pace High School in Florida. He also played football as a running back but focused more on baseball. Perfect Game ranked him number 24 on their list of top high school prospects. In 2010, Russell Addison played in the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game and was part of the U18 USA National Team that won gold at the 2011 COPABE 18U/AAA Pan American games.

Addison in November 2011 had signed a National Letter of Intent to play college baseball with Auburn Tigers baseball team of Auburn University. However, he would forgo it to join the Oakland Athletics who selected him with the 11th overall pick of the first round in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft. He received a $2.625 million signing bonus.

He started playing with the minor league’s Arizona League Athletics and by the end of the 2012 season, he was named by Baseball America as the best prospect of the Oakland Athletics. In July 2014, Addison was traded to the Chicago Cubs. After another stint in the minor league, Addison Russell was called to the majors in April 2015. The following year, Addison’s performance was key to helping his side win the World Series.

Parents

Russell’s parents are; mother Milany Ocampo-Russell and father Wayne Russell. However, Wayne Russell is not his biological father but his step-father. Addison waGeoffreylly born as Geoffreye O’Neal Addison Robert Watts Jr III to an African-American father who has remained unknown to the media.

It was after Wayne Russell adopted him at the age of 13 that he changed his name to Addison Wayne Russell. From the information we gathered, Addison’s father has never really been involved in his life. From when he was 30 months old, the father figure in his life was his mother’s husband, Wayne Russell.

No information about Addison’s biological father has ever surfaced in the public. However, Addison’s mom told in early 2017 that when Addison was born she agreed with his biological father to name him Addison after her favorite actor Bruce Willis’ character David Addison in her favorite TV show of him, Moonlighting TV series.

Wife, Children

Addison Russell has two children from two different women. One of his children, son Aiden Kai Margallo Russell was from his marriage to Melisa Reidy which ended in a divorce in 2017. Addison met Melisa through a mutual friend in Pensacola, Florida and in January 2016 they were married. However, before their marriage, they had welcomed Aiden in 2015.

Unfortunately, their marriage was only short-lived. In June 2017, Melisa took to her Instagram page to post a cryptic message stating that she was being cheated on, lied to and disrespected which was why she was looking forward to a new beginning. Her friend took to the comment section of the now-deleted Instagram post to claim that Addison hit Melisa in front of the children.

 

Addison would later release a statement denying the allegations that he had physically abused his wife. The MLB launched investigations into the physical abuse allegations but Melisa’s lawyer said that Melisa would not be cooperating with the MLB on the investigations.

Addison’s other child, a daughter named Mila Jade Engstrom-Russell was born in May 2015 by his ex-girlfriend Mallory Engstrom. Before things turned sour, Addison was known to frequently gush about his wife (Melisa) on his Instagram page. When the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, she alongside their two kids was around to celebrate the trophy with him. Melisa hails from Bay Minette, Alabama and is a licensed cosmetologist.
